Model Behavior: Groot in Carbonite Garage Kit!
Time to put together another garage kit! Bill brings a kit featuring a pretty sweet mash-up: baby Groot at 1:1 scale frozen in carbonite. We use this kit as an opportunity to practice some oil washes, as well as install a lighting kit. This was the project that put us in contact with VoodoFX!

This is cool and all, but it makes me wonder about the legality of this, because I’m assuming this isn’t licensed by Disney? In a recent (most recent?) episode of Untitled there was some discussions about this topic, and while Adam didn’t want to say straight out he is against selling the intellectual property of others, Norm and Will did seem a bit more skeptical.
Again, it’s very cool, but isn’t this a bit scummy? As a talented artist why do you feel the need to ride the coattails of someone else’s hard work like this? It is basically selling fan art, which is a big no no. Especially in this case where Baby Groot is such a relatively new thing and there’s a bunch of licensed Baby Groot merchandise to buy.
I love these videos, but wouldn’t this time and effort have been better spent on some creators’ original content, promoting their hard work, instead of someone lazily using someone else’s intellectual property without permission?
I think if you listen again now, that Adam has a point. The guys doing garage kits aren’t going to be getting rich on this. Therefore Disney (ex lucas film for starwars) probably wont be that bothered about a crossover garage kit between the two movies. There will be a certain amount of peeps who will want this but it wont detract from the income of Disney. plus I think (not sure) voodoofx usually has the rights for lighting kits that they sell.
At the end of the day I think it is give and take.
Just my thoughts though don’t roast me lol.
I would have thought “all set” might refer to setting of the sails of a ship, not glue. Who knows? Where’s a lexicographer when you need one?
Turned out great y’all!! Definitely going to try some oil washes now, seems less stressful than acrylic lol. Also new premium member here! We kept on seeing all these awesome teasers on Twitter and it’s already totally worth it 😀
You really should put a link to the kits when you do these videos. Or address it if not possible to buy one (maybe I didn’t hear it?)
Awesome ! I don’t mind seeing you two everywhere these days. 🙂
For drilling ‘grabby’ materials, it can be worth having a modified set of drill bits. Use a diamond file to put a flat on the cutting edge parallel to the drill axis. This used to be referred to as a ‘dubbed’ drill point.
Such a good video I love how that looks with all the lights lit up!
I love your YouTube videos! its cool to see that your fans of and now premium members of tested 🙂
Oh hai there! Love being part of the community and since we know comments make our day we try to leave them behind whenever we can 🙂
Aww thanks so much! The maker community is the whole reason we get to work together doing what we love so we try to give back whenever we can!
Dammit, why did you have to show this to me.
I just ordered the kit for myself !!! 😉
I’ll have to build a frame since the version available was Groot in carbonite and the side panels. No frame.
Also thinking of doing the lighting myself with an Arduino.
Ho great, now i have to learn that to !
