Model Behavior: Shiny Model Cars!

Bill and Norm build this delightful garage kit from Daniel Dawson, a 3D printed flying retro car model. For this project, we wnted to give this car a shiny candy coated finish, and experiment with two different applications of glossy clear coats: an Alclad lacquer Klear Kote and off the shelf floor gloss!

  1. Excellent one. Looks great! Thanks for the vid.
Can’t wait to see how you guys will finish this project (with lights and stuff, maybe paint on the smoke underneath? WHO KNOWS?). It’s a fun one. ^^

  2. Cool project and lovely little model.

I like these “teach-along” videos, get an entertaining video and useful info on how to do some of the stuff, but also how to not always panic when things don’t look right straight away, time and patience can be the key!

  3. Absolutely awesome video guys! I learned so much, watching at the edge of my seat during the scary parts!

I also would like to know more about finding garage kits…are there any good resources where they can be found?

  4. ah, now we know why they were talking about modding them with lights! excellent work 🙂

Congrats on the model, is there somewhere we can find your work? or are these a smaller hobby thing?

To SmithPad – I would think some of these kind of kits come from the “RPF”, no idea on this one, but on others they have shown they have mentioned the RPF, from what I could see you have to be an active member on the forum to “level up” to getting into the section where you can buy from other members, which is understandable of course.

  5. It’s just a hobby, but I would love to do a small run of kits at some point, it would give me an excuse to learn molding and casting!

  6. Maybe I’ll take this opportunity to up my mold making game. To those of you familiar with mold making, how difficult does this kit look? The main pieces are the chassis, the canopy (with a hinge not shown in the purple version), and the exhaust (which is hollow to allow for LED lights). There are some little interior bits too, but I think I can handle those.

  7.   I’ve only done a few very basic dump molds, not multi part ones, so not much experience for this one, but it should be entertaining for you! 🙂

The roof, separate to the car, with a couple of air vents shouldn’t be too difficult,
but the main body should prove interesting, with the middle effectively missing.

Wonder if a split model might be easier to handle? Cut and shut car effectively, somewhere past the exhaust hole, or maybe even splitting it in half, but that would probably make more work, for mold and Model build clean up.

As for the exhaust cloud, if it’s hollow, I wonder if a small rotocast would work, may be time and labour consuming though. Could make it solid from the mold with a tube down the middle for inserting the lights later?

Just thoughts really, hopefully other more knowledgeable people can help out

  8. hey,

I’m somewhat new so I don’t really know i this has been asked or answered before but can you add the ability of casting e.g. YouTube to TV and such just I’m often using a mobile and I would love to stream it to the TV so I can enjoy it on the big screen…

    Thank you.
