Model Behavior: Bandai 1/5000 Star Destroyer, Part 1

Kayte and Norm embark on a new model kit build–this time the ridiculously detailed 1/5000 Star Destroyer snap-fit kit from Bandai. In our first day of work on this model, we prime the pieces and try our hand at adding surface “aztec” paneling, using fine strips of cut masking tape. This kind of subtle surface work is wonderfully relaxing, and adds detail that helps model starships look extra eye-catching!

  1. Here’s some aztecing I did for Lauren Oliver’s (https://www.instagram.com/profksergeev/) Hathaway build. He drew what he wanted to scale and I recreated it as splines – the trick was making sure all the bits lined up so I could do it for one panel then put it in an array function to repeat it around the saucer. Kayte vinyl cut the pattern then Lauren ‘weeded’ the whole thing – removing the open areas.

  2. Vallejo’s Mecha Color does an absurdly good job of covering without filling any detail. I’ve never painted one of those kits but I find it rarely takes more than two light coats to get to full opacity and at least ten coats before it actually starts looking like a layer of paint.

  3. It’s probably way too late for this advice, but to give more coverage of aztecking, I would have maybe did an inverse masking, leaving gaps this time, and paint again with a grey that was halfway between the two shades you have. A third shade like that would have given that density you desire without overwhelming it.

  4. Not for nothing, a 144th scale Destroyer would “only” be about 11′ long. Daunting, but in no way impossible. Be cool to see that tackled so that a Bandai Falcon could be displayed on the back like a tick.

Come to think of it, a 144th scale Destroyer bridge would be just about a perfect diorama build for the Bandai falcon.

  5. Also, I would have thought it was obvious where “aztecing” came from if you just look up Aztec designs…the hard, right angle steps of the ziggurats being the first easy comparison. Perhaps I’m speaking out of school, but it doesn’t seem like it would have come from anything else.

  6.   I think your math is a little off. A star destroyer is 1600 meters or 5250 feet. At 1″=144″ that’s a model 36′ long.

  7. Ah… No worries. Kinda figured it was a simple translation issue. Still – A 36 foot long star destroyer would be awesome to see.

  8. I am kitbashing a space ship presently and when I saw this video I was oh… For sure going to Aztec the paint job. At my local hobby shop, they had pre-cut stencils for Aztecing. Thanks for the inspiration Kayte and Norm!

  9. Here’s some Aztecing I did on the Defiant model I’m working on. It’s a bit messy, but I’m still learning.

Also, one side was painted all hand brush, the other I finally got an airbrush so I could protect more of the details.

  10. Nice work, I can’t wait to start on mine. This was such a good idea on how to do the aztec pattern, thanks for the great video!

Here is a star destroyer I did a while back.
