This Old FX Shop: Dinosaur Garage Kits

Back in Frank’s shop, we take on our next garage kit challenge: dinosaur busts we found at this year’s Monsterpalooza. These reptiles have lots of sculptural detail to bring out with paint, so Norm and Frank look to nature for inspiration and reference for their distinct approaches.

  1. Fantastic content thank you. Great tips for reference and some finishing touches. As always a fun lesson that inspires creation.

  2. I think the student surpassed the teacher on this one. Norm’s looks more real-life and Franks’s is more movie-life. Great job on both!

  3. ever tried one of those pearlescent (colorshifting) coats on a model like this, or do they build to much? (or can you only buy car quantities)…

  4. Ace video, as always, guys. I think Norm’s kit definitely came out the best, although I like them both. When I saw the thumbnail for the video, I kinda naturally assumed that Norm’s was actually the one that Frank painted (no offense to either of you). Great job on both pieces. Looking forward to the next one. Thanks.

    P.S.
When applying masking tape to a painted surface, is there ever a concern about taking paint off when removing the tape, or is that just a case of using cheapo tape?

  5. I would have bet everything in my pocket that the brighter coloured one was was Norm’s and the natural looking one was Frank’s.

    Great job all round.

  6. By far the best model kit that Norm has painted. Did you find out who make the kit?

Also, is the central place or keyword I can use to find these? I’m in Australia, and can’t exactly make it to Monsterpalooza or DesignerCon.

  7. I really enjoy these model build and painting videos. Lots of great tips and tricks in them!

  8. Possibly the best of these painting videos I’ve seen here. Loved the approach to using reference materials and the wash technique explanations.

  9. Where’s the best place to find kits like this online? Any FB groups or sites that aggregate stuff like this? I don’t seen any cons locally coming through with people selling stuff quite like this.

I see all kinds of neat garage kits come up online, and I’m always scratching my head as to how people find them and stay up on people releasing them.
