This Old FX Shop: Cold Casting Idols

This week, Frank shows us how to cast resin with different metallic powders to give castings a beautiful finish right out of the mold. To test different cold casting techniques, we use a mold of a familiar movie prop!

  1. Easily one of the top 5 series on the site.

    Question:

If you used iron flakes could they be rusted instead of shined up, and would multiple coatings of metal flake before pouring make any difference?

Thanks for the great content, and idea generations.

  2. Using the right types of metal powders, you can absolutely make it rust! In fact I have used chemical patinas on copper cold casts before. I’m not going to say it’s always perfect outcome. And I would certainly exercise some caution and look into the chemistry a little before doing anything, as many patinas and rust accelerators can be pretty harsh chemicals and who knows how they may interact with certain types of resins. Usually the techs at reynolds, smoothon, and polytek can give you an idea of how crazy an idea like that is. But in terms of treatment like rusting, usually you still want to buff it first to actually get those metallic particles better exposed on the surface as cold casting has a tendency to “laminate” the particles into the resin. Another cool part about cold casting any kind of ferrous metal like iron is that you can play around with adding more powder directly to the resin to make it hold a magnet. You just have to be careful not to add to much, as it can inhibit the resin from setting depending on what your casting material is.

  3. Great looking work guys. Powder brass seems like something you would wear a mask to handle, I’m probably wrong though.

  4. Is the resulting cast hard, soft or rubbery? When they sat one down it seemed to jiggle a bit but I might have misinterpreted what I saw.

  5. This is what one looks like with a tube of rubNbuf on it. It is my first sculpt so it’s a bit ruff.

  6. Question for Frank: what’s the purpose of the pipe in the outer stone jacket of the mold? And incidentally, I presume it’s a plaster mold jacket?

  7. it’s a rigid casting. when they were filling the molds, there was a little bit of overflow; giving that one an uneven base and making it not sit flat.

  8. Does putting some pigment into the mold work with slush casting ? or will the rotation cause some unregular spreading over the cast ?

  9. Is it possible to by a casting from the mold owner?

I second this question, and would add, can we purchase a casting from Tested?
