PREMIUM – Model Behavior: Fusion 360 Basics!
Bill designs many of his props for 3D printing using Fusion 360, so it’s about time we get acquainted with the modeling software. Using one of Adam’s spacesuit parts as reference, we go through some modeling basics in Fusion to replicate a piece of Apollo A7L hardware!

Great video just a tip when measuring PCD (distance between the holes) you can measure the hole and zero the calipers and then measure between the outside of the holes for an accurate measurement hope this is a help
GREAT video. I hope this becomes a series.
I’ve been using Fusion 360 for a couple of years and love it. I’m looking forward to learning more myself, and I think it’s by far the best option for other makers starting with modeling.
Great video. I’ve been using mechanical 3D CAD software for the last 20 years and teaching CAD to students for the last 7. I appreciate anyone who takes time to learn and teach others in the skill.
Just as an FYI for new CAD users, one rule I always stress is to never do math in your head or in an external calculator. That is what the software is for and it usually does a much better job than you can. In the video at around 29 minutes in, Bill is trying to figure out the minimum distance between the opposing holes. He used the measure tool to get the dimension from center to center but then tried to do the math to figure out the measurement he wanted. He didn’t have to. the system was showing him the minimum distance measurement in the dialog box on the right side of the screen.
Awesome tip, thanks!
Well would you look at that! =D
Great video!
I love Fusion360, so easy to use!
I also hope this becomes a series!
I use that trick every time ! Quite proud of myself when I found about it.
This was AWESOME! Thank you! I have been fighting with Fusion 360 for the last few days (Stumbling through and teaching myself). This answered so many questions! Creating the Hand Mirror for a production of Beauty and the Beast and using all of my “Tested” learned skills.
Please make this a series of videos!
Correct me if I’m wrong – But I don’t think Fusion 360 is free anymore. They offer a 30 day trial and that’s it. After that it’s a subscription service just like all other Autodesk products.
Ooops… Never mind. I think I figured it out.

Yay! love this video. Just started playing with fusion360 myself. hope to see more CAD with friends videos 🙂
very cool video, many thanks bill and norm. my goodness, this looks like it behaves like vector graphics plus version control and rebasing. might this be the thing that gets me into 3d stuff?
does anyone of you know what the software of choice for linux would be?
This was such a huge help!!! I have a X-Carve CNC Router and have been trying to figure out how to do some prop making with it. Most of the info out there is for 3D printing which is a completely (opposite) approach. So this is my vote that “Model Behavior” does a routing project in the future.
Thanks!
Fantastic video, Fusion360 has been my go to for a couple of years, not as proficient as I would like to be with it, but an amazing tool for its price point. And this video gave me some great tips to try out.
I too hope this becomes a series, I would love to see some CNC action!
man this makes me miss school. learned a lot in the cad class i took in college, but now its work or school. no time for both :c
This could be renamed “Norm being properly amazed by CAD.” I loved seeing how genuinely impressed and amazed he was as he learned how it worked.
I’d love to print one of these out, but we time-lapsed over many of the important dimensions. Can we have either those dimensions, or the file? since we don’t all have Ryan’s original to measure from? 😉
For historic reasons, the Z axis doesn’t face up, but you can set it to do so using the preferences menu found by clicking your username at the top right of the screen. The advantage is that parts designed with their base sitting on the XY plane, will import into slicers with the correct orientation.
Sweet video guys! Just started on Fusion 360 so it was cool to learn some more tricks
Really enjoyed this video. I’ve think I’ve pushed Tinkercad to the limit, so learning Fusion360 is the perfect next step.
Exactly what I was thinking. Kinda’ ticked when it got to that point :
