Model Behavior: Weathering a Model (Space)Ship!
Plastic model kits often need finishing work to make the models look as good as their source material. This week, Kayte and Norm take on the task of painting a Space Battleship Yamato 2199 snap fit kit, using washes and rust effects to make the spaceship look old and battle-worn. The result is a striking transformation!

I’m just as excited for “model behavior” content as I am for “one day builds” now. Kayte and Bill are crushing it! 🤩
I love this series. Kayte has been such a great addition to the site! She’s great on camera, knows her stuff, and to boot sheis a clear communicator. I hope the project she’s working on in Adam’s cave is either the Deag MF or the Bandai Perfect Grade =D
You don’t know the story behind the anime? The ship is meant to be the battleship Yamato that was sunk in WWII, then rebuild as a space battleship in a bid to save the Earth. So yeah, it was a complete rust bucket.
this is exactly the type of content i want.
Awesome! I was very much a Star Blazers watcher as a kid…
These videos are great.
I like how Norm has gone from being almost afraid to put paint onto the model with Frank, to weathering the backend of a model while Kayte weathers the front with nary a look of fear on his face at all.
I have some Bandai models finished at home (Gundam and an X-Wing) that could use some paint. I’m absolutely petrified of starting to paint them.
Stan
really fun model to paint! a finished pic:
Since cinnamon is a organic material, will it start to mold over time?
it looks fantastic, BUT… you gotta do a better job trimming and filing down the sprues on those model parts…some of those things looked HUGE!
Probably my favorite premium content.
that’s my fault about the sprues, i had to rush to finish building the model late the night before to prep it for that day’s shoot! (what this tweet was referring to: https://twitter.com/nchan/status/989046183204139008 )
Norm and Kayte, you guys are awesome!
This model really calls out for one of those “sliding” before/after GIF. Perhaps a future effort can have two fixed images for the comparison.
Keep it up with stuff like this!
i love these! more please!
Well…Cinnamon! The perfect trick for christmass modelling! Thank you Kayte and Norm.

The Yamato submerges and capsizes in water quite frequently in every incarnation of the story. Rust would be appropriate.
That kit really needs more paint than just weathering, though :/
So cool! I just told my kids what I want for my Birthday! And this video will be close to hand when I finish it.
I’ve made Christmas Ornaments our of cinnamon and have never had an issue with mold. They’re about 5 years old now and still smell great!
The best videos on the site – this is worth the price of membership.
Thanks!
Norm, Kayte and Bill, you inspired me to buy a Maschinen Krieger model kit last night, so that I can try out some of the paint and weathering techniques you’ve been showing us lately….
maschinen krieger stuff is soooo beautiful. i love the krote mech and have the 3A one
I love these builds! Great job Norm and Kayte!
This is a wonderful series. Love it.
Something to consider for those thinking of using the techniques as discussed in the video:
If you HAVE painted the model and have used acrylic paint to do it – and then you start using this technique – you will destroy the underlying paint and make yourself sad. It’s very important to make sure you put on a top coat of clear lacquer before covering the model with alcohol. Alcohol destroys uncoated acrylic paint.

Gah! Get some Tamiya sprue cutters and some sanding sticks. Sooo many sprue gates need to be cleaned up.
I’m still missing Frank but i’m getting used to the new crew. Videos like these are great!
Yes! Maschinen Krieger is really cool. Building a Grosser Hund.
I love Kayte !
This looks awesome!
What kit was this exactly?
