Adam Savage Explores the Sound Mixing of Hamilton!

Adam Savage visits the sound mixing booth for the San Francisco touring production of Hamilton to learn how audio engineer Kevin McCoy mixes the dozens of microphone and instrument tracks in real-time during every performance. It’s a mind-blowing look at important role of sound engineering and mixing for stage shows and musical theater.

  1. Sound mixing is a very specific skill requiring first that you can hear those subtle nuances that need action and then that you instantly know what to do about them. I don’t have the ears for it.

I have done some (strictly amateur) lighting work though and there is nothing like the buzz from going through a performance, hitting the cues and constantly watching out for that little thing that someone has done different tonight and requires you to adapt on the fly. I can relate to the prep work too. I’ve spent hours watching rehearsals and marking up a script with notes in the margins from which to build up cue sheets. I think I need to find a way back into that world someday…

  2. Super interesting. I would have liked to see how he synchronizes all that with what he’s seeing real time on stage. Are his cues only from the folder or by watching the performers as well ? How far is he from the stage?
    Anyway, great video.

  3. Same. I’ve designed lighting for shows (high school, college, church, nothing fancy) and sound mixing/production was the closes I’ve ever come to failing a class in college. The only savior was a project mixing sound for a video clip, and since I was a video production major it just felt like editing, which I was slightly more than passable at.

Sound is a tricky business and I will never not be impressed by those who just get it. There’s a great 20khz podcast episode about the Hamilton sound guys, as well, if you’re interested.
