How Adam Savage Is Filming Himself in Self-Isolation

We shot this piece last month before going into shelter-in-place, in which Adam shows his custom-assembled lightweight iPhone stand he put together to film himself during weekend builds. But now that he’s alone in the cave all the time, this rig is proving essential for Adam to document his builds in isolation as well as livestream every week. Hope it helps in giving you inspiration to make your own cameraphone rigs!

  1. If you don’t need something to fold flat for portability then a wighted mic stand is less than $25. I also like a selfie stick that Polaroid makes. It has a detachable phone clamp with a 1/4-20 thread so you can put the clamp on a standard tripod. The trigger connects to the phone via Bluetooth so you can use the detached handle to trigger the shutter (or video record start and stop) remotely. It’s also great for stop motion because of the remote trigger. Cheers!

  2. I’m not sure anyone should scramble to replicate this. From what I’ve seen it falls over every few seconds and induces motion sickness in many

  3. Hi Adam, I see you’re using some AirPods Pro. On the verge of buying some myself. Air they good are they worth it? Could you talk a little about them in one of your videos. Thanks.

  4. Hi Adam,

You mentioned in a podcast that you have the pattern for the mask you were wearing on tested.com but I don’t see the pattern anyplace obvious. Can you please provide a link. Thank so much,

    Kathleen

  5. MLUDER was on a great track.

A round weighted-base microphone stand works as a wonderful and stable camera stand. Years ago, I needed a camera at the back of an auditorium, and a tripod wouldn’t fit. Luckily, there was a hardware store down the street from the venue, and I cobbled together at mic stand-to-camera 1/4″-20 to 5/8″-27 adapter from PVC fittings and some sink sprayer hose

It fit between two theater seats in the back row, and worked great up above the heads of the guests. I’ve streamlined the build since…but even better, I found a piece of kit that is even better. It’s a 1/4″-20 to 5/8″-27 adapter from Camvate

    https://www.camvate.com/camvate-thread-adapter-microphone-stand-5-8quot-27-female-to-1-4quot-20-male-for-camera-monitor_p1361.html

Attach this to the mic stand, and your favorite cellphone mount will screw onto the adapter, giving you a very stable and very capable low footprint camera stand. Throw the adapter into a travel bag, and anywhere you go to present, Adam, you can make a monopod with a little help from your favorite audio guy.

    Hope this helps…
