Adam Savage’s King Arthur Armor Build, Part 3

With Adam’s patterns laid out and the aluminum cut, it’s time to shape and shrink these sheets of metal into the over-hundred unique pieces that will make up this armor. Terry introduces Adam on his various tools and methods for shaping metal into compound curves and complex forms.

  1. Really fun to learn the nuance of his techniques. There’s SO much there that comes from just doing, doing doing.

  2. This is great, I have no plans to make a suit of armour but it’s fun and instructive to watch nonetheless. Also now we know how to soften sheet aluminium! Will this series be out on DVD at some point? I’d love to show my mother this as she made her own shop-bought quality clothes for decades, and I think she’d get a kick out of the similarities (thinking in 3D, cutting patterns) as well as the differences.

  3. This really is an amazing series. Terry is incredibly patient, knowledgeable, and clear about his descriptions for everything. And yet there’s a poetry to every single statement… Just awesome.

  4. Love the tip re: using marker to gauge heat.

When making neon signs, you wear special glasses that block the red-light from the flame you are heating the glass in, so that you can see what is happening with the glass tube even though it is surrounded with fire.

Additionally, when planning your sign’s bends, you mark the length of glass you are heating for each curve with a soft pencil like this | | |, with the center line being the middle of the bend.

But an additional feature of the graphite marking is that it will glow red when the glass it is on is hot enough to form a smooth curve. So when you have all three graphite marks glowing, you know you are ready to bend the glass!

  5. The amount of experience what is shown in every word Terry is saying is amazing! I could seriously watch this all day.

  6. This series is the reason that I made the jump to premium…I’m hanging on the edge of me seat each week watching this master bend the metal to his will.

  7. I’m thinking we need a new series where Adam travels around to master craftsmen learning the skills and transitioning these into his own builds, either as Cosplay or making replicas etc.

  8. Very fun! No plans to make armor either, but I don’t have plans to make a lot of the things I see on the likes of This Old House. It’s just learning and watching masters do their craft. Very impressive. Terry seems like a very patient teacher and it’s great to see Adam so excited to learn the techniques, really absorb the instruction, and then apply it. Saw that a lot in the videos with Peter Lyons with the sword making. Adam seems quite teachable!

  9. I just watched a little short video of Jesse James making a fender and he just turned down the O levels on the torch until it was really sooty and covered the aluminum in soot. As you heat the aluminum after you know it is annealed when the soot burns off. Very handy and you don’t need find the elusive sharpy.
