Adam Savage’s Nailer and Stapler Storage Rack

In this tale from the cave, Adam recaps a recent weekend build he couldn’t resist making: a storage rack for his collection of favorite staplers and nailers. From his trusty T50 staple gun to pneumatic staplers that he’s been favoring lately, these shelves needed to hold nailers of all sizes. And that’s where Adam ran into an unexpected problem. Let’s hear him tell the story!

  1. Hey Adam-
Maybe your next Weekend Build should be a tail-off table for your table saw! It’s kinda sketchy to have the sawn wood flop off the back edge like that. Also, check out a riving knife addition to your saw. Makes ripping sooo much easier, and helps to prevent kickback.

    Love your work, man!

  2. Instead of a drawer, you could make a smaller shelf or other way to hold one of the small bins like you have your nuts and bolts organized in. It’d let you see how much stock you have of each fastener more easily than a full drawer would, as well as helping standardize bins around the shop (for ease of stocking replacements – you do keep a few spares around in a corner in case one gets dropped and cracks/shatters, right?)

  3. oh my, that is such a relatable mistake. and i know that feeling when you think you’re rounding the last corner and right in front of you is the finish line. and then you see the finish line is there all right, but it’s uphill over there.

  4. As a possible addition to that build, a bungee to hold them in as you move it around, or when Californian geology gives you movement when you’re not around. Or a loose netting system with Velcro, something to keep your expensive tools from falling out seems in order there.

  5. With the possible exception of the $30 T50 stapler, I would be shocked if any tool in that cart couldn’t survive a one story drop onto concrete without issue. They are not made to be coddled.

  6. When I find a need for a staple gun, my first purchase will be a forward action staple gun for the very reason of arm position. We’ve seen a lot of stapling in recent videos, and being able to use body weight rather than wrist strength to hold a stapler against a surface while pushing down on the other end of what effectively becomes a fulcrum would be a simple and immediate game changer.

Unless you’ve got a pneumatic version and then my whole argument becomes moot, of course.

  7. Love the project but have a question about the background. At around the 4 minute mark, while Adam is cutting plywood, you can see what looks like a Swiss Army Knife ceiling fan or some other mechanical apparatus… What the heck is that? 🙂
