Adam Savage’s One Day Builds: Space Camera Shroud!

This week’s One Day Build is all about space cameras! Adam shows off a few of his favorite vintage cameras and camera replicas from NASA missions, and collaborates with fellow space obsessive Anthony Kovacs to make a shroud for the venerated Nikon F3. It’s a day of cut and sew to make a beautiful replica camera thermal cover, just like the beta cloth ones used by Space Shuttle astronauts!

  1. I’m space and phtotography geek. The viewfinder was an Action Finder which had great eye relief so you could look through your helmet and see the shot. There was also another boxy type which probably was just a reflector type like those on larger format cameras. They also were were toying for the first time with autofocus in these cameras. There is a complete nerdy breakdown of the camera at this site.

  2. I don’t know if it is because I’ve shot with Hasselblad cameras but this is the first Nagata build that had me in a tizzy as an obvious fake. I’m not dissing Ryan, but it felt really wrong.

  3. anthony also answered to the best of his abilities in the yt comments. a coated sunshade material given to them by ryan nagata. from the way it handled and the plastic-foil-like look of the inside, i figured it would be something like the heavier coated cordura fabrics, but then the outside showed that very fine and dense weave.

  4. Now, was this shroud put on by the NASA ground crew before the camera went into the shuttle or was it an “in-situ” kind of deal? I suppose it doesn’t ultimately matter, but I like imagining all the minutiae the astronaut crew has to go through before anything is used. Thinking of something so monumentally important as every space-flight and -walk as no more routine than changing a bag in a vacuum before moving to the upstairs carpets tickles my brain in a very specific way.
