Sorry I’m late to the game. I only recently found the podcasts and really
enjoy them. I’d like to comment on Indiana
Jones riding the U-boat. I was in
the U.S. Navy and made a patrol on a fleet ballistic missile submarine. A few of the sailors I’ve known rode diesel
powered subs. The Gato class U.S. submarines,
when they dived they had a limited battery life. As a rule of thumb, they could go 1 knot for 24 hours or 24 knots for 1 hour. Assuming the U-boats were similar, they
would have made the entire trip on the surface. Since the second world war had not started at the time of Raiders of the Lost Ark, there is no
reason for the U-boat to dive. The first
U.S. submarines were designated SS-(sequence number). The SS stands for Submersible Ship and that
is literally what they were.
