Maybe I’m just skeptical….but I just watched the entire podcast, and I’m still unsure if I know anything about the skeptical movement at all except a couple famous guys and mythbusters are skeptics…which I suppose makes sense, but…maybe there should have been some explanation somewhere about the actual movement and what it is, how it started, rather than just the meeting in a Casino where people argue about….anything?
Or is that really just what it is? (This is the first time I’ve ever heard about a skeptics movement) [and if they really did explain it and I just missed it, then my bad!]
I support that, it’s a fantastic podcast
I’ve been proponent of the skeptics movements for over 6 years (I was much more active in going to the websites when I was first turned on to it in high school). Skepticism in the modern sense is the philosophical and every day corollary to science and scientific thinking. The way I see it it’s science in the every day setting. The movement does tend to take on this person-based character as Adam described it but there is a mountain of material covering topics from the role of faith/religion, the philosophy, the results of debates and investigations, entertainment pieces, and different interpretations by different people of what it means to be a skeptic. To me I am indebted to it because it showed me that there are underlying principles to how one can think in terms of science and evaluation separate from science classes and textbooks. It revealed to me the reality of science beyond the results that get printed in textbooks which is that there is always a debate, a controversy, empirical work, and community. Applying a general scientific crucible to aspects of life something I’ve taken with me and directly fused with the sociology I now feverishly study.
It is this aspect, of a broader, more general, but comprehensive scientific thinking/methodology that is ultimately field agnostic, science itself, that gets underrepresented in science curriculum. At most we get the very set version of the scientific method from Bacon and I feel like that is inadequate given the reality of how science has been operating for centuries. I do notice however that students who do science enough seem to pick up on it over time but its an unspoken process that I think can be helped with a little more explicit discussion in schools of all kinds.
I thought the same thing as Adam has been a guest on their podcast a couple times. It is a wonderful and informative podcast.
I read Michael Shermer’s book Why People Believe Weird Things several years ago. Interesting read from what I recall. He takes a few popular dodgy subjects that people cling to, explains the thought process from both sides (believers and skeptics), and explains the ways in which holes can be poked into them.
I been a skeptic since I was 18. It’s really the only way of life now lol. Science and reason BITCHEZ!
Been a skeptic for years and am so, so glad to see this topic being discussed by two of my favorite groups ever (Adam Savage and the Tested guys)
Astounding video, thanks guys =)
I love these podcasts. These and This is only a test, great content guys as always.
For me this podcast had a very heavy ‘Humanism’ vibe to it. I understand if that’s the direction you want your site to go in, but it’s not for me.
Great job, guys. I think that people too frequently confuse skepticism and cynicism, and often feel that religious belief and skepticism cannot go hand-in-hand. If progress is to be made in the areas of critical thinking and logical thought processes in the general public it is important that it be done collaboratively. Attacking people’s beliefs has too much potential to drive them away. Provide people with the tools to make proper decisions for themselves; attempting to make decisions for them doesn’t help anyone.
Great podcast, guys! I would love to hear Adam talk more about this.
Nice one. Though I wish wall posting still worked.
