Questions for Adam! – Still Untitled: The Adam Savage Project – 11/10/15

This week, we start off talking about jetpacks, Tomorrowland, and Adam’s new spacesuit. As promised, we also take some questions from listeners, and get some pretty good ones! To answer a question about the Mythbusters production, Adam goes into detail about what goes on in a typical day of filming the show. (The second podcast from our trip to Alcatraz will be up in a couple weeks. It’ll be worth the wait!)

  1. is there a good reason that they don’t extend the suit arms slightly and have them just blank ends so you hand can move your hands around in there, and have robotic hands/manipulators on the end of the suit arms, with controls inside the suit? Sounds less fatiguing.

  2. I’m not a prop person, probably will never be a prop person, but I want one of Ryan’s AL7 replicas more than my next breath. Can’t wait to see another up-close video on one!

  3. All three of you guys totally echo my own feelings/reaction to the movie “Tomorrowland”. When I saw the first trailers, I was SO very excited by the promise of the film and then SO disappointed with the actual film.

Like you, Will, I really wanted to see a lot more of that bright, shining alternate tomorrow that we could have had. Being a young child in the 1960s (I was 6 years old when Apollo 11 landed on the moon with vivid memories of watching it live on TV), the unbridled optimism that us kids were infused with via the space program (I won’t even address the zeitgeist buzz kill of Viet Nam) is one of the things that directly led me into the career I have today.

I am a mechanical engineer who still dreams big because I saw what dreaming big could achieve and I try to perpetually inculcate my two daughters with the same outlook. When my first child was born in 1998, I would tell people that, hopefully, she was going to be one of the first persons to walk on Mars. At the live show last month, I got to share this story with Dr. Dava Newman at the reception afterwards. I really enjoyed Adam’s interview with her and my own brief chat with her. She and I are the same age and we discussed our shared childhood inspirations. Thank you three fellows again for that opportunity!

As for the teased space suit video, now I have some additional context for some photos that Adam recently posted from his cave following a dinner event with Traci Des Jardins. One of the photos was a shot of several people clustered around the pool table with an Apollo-era suit laid out. Much like Ron Erickson, I am beyond excited to see this suit in infinitely more detail!

  4. There are two photos over on The RPF! (I tried to link but my comment wouldn’t post.)

Well said. That is the #1 reason I am so obsessed with manned spaceflight history.

  5. Just a guess…..

Final episode of Mythbusters features a Rube Goldberg machine of popular myths…. Or of favourite /biggest explosions….

I just hope Barrel Of Bricks is in there somewhere! 😉

  6. In addition to the B team showing up in the last season, it would be great to see as many of the previous builders that would be willing to come back. Scottie particularly comes to mind. And a ‘full staff’ bow at the end would be wonderful. Giving due credit to the full team.

And although I doubt it will happen, I think it would be very interesting for Adam to have Jamie on the Talking room. I love hearing Jamie speak, yet he rarely does. And Adam has a great ability to get people to talk. I wonder if they both could put aside their standard interactions for a less….confrontational? one.

That was my thought when Adam alluded to a complex process with numerous items that must perform properly, that would be really cool!

  8. Nanci Agree. I would add Frank Doyle, J.D. Nelson, Jessie Combs and the Myth-terns. I checked out the cast list on IMDB. You would need to add another hour in order to include all of the experts used over the years.

Jamie’s contributions are his Inventions (“Bomb Baby”, “Lawnmower from Hell”, the wrecking ball for the Simpson episode, the cow catcher rig used to plow through traffic (I want one)) and his approach for solving problems. He is not verbal, for TV, he needs to team up with a talker. As Adam reminds him, Jamie does not do “good TV”. Personally, I do not agree with Adam. I like watching Jamie create things.

  9. Apples and oranges.

Astronauts aren’t doing fine motor-skill work through a peep-hole, with their eyes fixed on a computer monitor in ideal temperature and lighting conditions… they are doing mechanical repair and maintenance on large pieces of industrial equipment whilst floating in a vacuum for 7 hours, completing five cycles of sundown/sunrise.

Any additional interface is a hindrance to efficiency and a potential risk. While surely demanding enough, the physical exertion is a minor hurdle compared to the hundreds of complications/failure-points that come with that type of equipment.

  10. is there a good reason that they don’t extend the suit arms slightly and have them just blank ends so you hand can move your hands around in there, and have robotic hands/manipulators on the end of the suit arms, with controls inside the suit? Sounds less fatiguing.

I believe that was how the suits in _Seveneves_ were designed. It came to my mind as I was listening to this episode.

  11. I’m sorry but 23 & Me has already gotten into trouble over their marketing, results, and “sharing/selling” consumers genetic information. I think you could do better at finding a sponsor.

  12. Next podcast you guys should talk about the show Arrow, as well as Marvels Agents of Shield. Two completely different shows, but I want to hear your guys opinions of them.

  13. I think AoS was mentioned during the Bonnie Burton Lego-build and IIRC neither Will nor Norm had seen it.

Personally I love it, it has gotten really good. This season appears to be stepping up the effects budget too, which is good.

I still watch Arrow, but it is getting a bit soap-opera’ey with its main characters not really having any real storylines any more, just new drama. The show also has a overly large main cast, frequent cross-overs, a flashback storyline rivaling LOST in its complexity/lack of forward momentum, characters with actual superpowers, parallell dimensions and now magic/immortality/ressurrection… not to mention they are bringing in time travel with Legends of Tomorrow. The Flash technically has all these things too, being in the same universe, but it has a more likable cast IMO and a proper story-arc for the hero.

  14. when i read the subject, i really want to hear more of the questions.

can you pretty please do a full podcast with nothing but questions and answers please 🙂

  15. I am almost caught up I got about one more day of binge listening and I’ll be current so I look forward to being able to talk actively with everyone also hello everyone

  16. I have a
question for Adam about the dynamic with Jamie on the Mythbusters set. There seems
to be tension there at times and at the Atlanta show you stated emphatically
that ‘Jamie and I are not friends’ in response to an audience question. My
impression is that you are like a rock band with members that respect each
other’s talents and do incredible things together, but cannot stand to be
around each other. Please tell me that I am wrong. Will you be working with
Jamie in the future? PS. Had a great time at the show. Thanks!

  17. Question for Adam: Looking back at all of the Mythbusters episodes, what’s your favorite moment to re-watch of both yourself and Jaime?

  18. This is not related to this most recent podcast, but I just watched the first three episodes of still untitled the Adam Savage Project and had a comment that applies to the second one. This is about the idea of problem solving and making and the creative process. I am in an FRC robotic team, and we just had a team building meeting, and one of the mentors quoted one of his mentors from when he was a kid and that quote was “Run as fast as you can towards your first failure”.

  19. Question for Adam: I’m not one of those people who need you and Jamie to be besties, but I was wondering about what qualities you admire or respect in him? Not as a coworker, but as a person?

P.S – I will, if ever I have a chance, ask this question at a panel because I’m interested in both of your responses, but I don’t know how likely that will be, so I’m asking it here.

P.P.S. Thank you so very much for 14 awesome years of great content. I wish you all the best in the future.
