First Comic-Cons – Still Untitled: The Adam Savage Project – 7/19/16

Comic-Con is coming up real soon! As we gear up for our week in San Diego, we’re joined by our friend Rebecca Watson to talk about fun encounters at conventions, as well as a few book recommendations. Plus, Adam’s great realization about hipsters.

  1. Adding another H. Jon Benjamin to the list: Satan in Lucy, the Daughter of the Devil. I miss that show.

  2. Fun episode, but definitely should have been entitled ‘CLANG!’ There’s something rather fun about people just freaking out and shamelessly namedropping for a bit…

Also, I really need to remember to watch these on the site rather than on Youtube when Rebecca’s on – she’s always fun, and the utterly toxic comment section always bums me out. ‘Don’t scroll down’, I hear you cry, but unfortunately it’s like the massive mosquito bite on my leg that I keep trying not to scratch…

  3. Lol you could see Norm gradually getting bored sitting in the corner to the point that Adam saw it and commented. Rebecca and Adam just vibe of each other so well.

  4. after your comment, of course i had to go and look at the yt comments and… jeez louise, what the fuck?

it’s kinda hilarious how surprised people are, and how upset they get about adam not being a member of their little club. he hasn’t exactly made his standing on matters a secret.

  5. Norm, I hope all of you binge watch Stranger Things on Netflix asap and discuss soon on Still Untitled. My better half and I can not stop talking about this work of art.

  6. This podcast changes so much when the usual group (Norm, Will, Adam and even Simone) is not present. With the usual group this podcast is all about Adam and experiences in his life or his perspective on pop culture topics. When there is a guest it changes to be about the guest. This isn’t inherently bad or unwanted, however I’ve noticed many viewers come to the podcast expecting one thing and then when it is something different they get upset. My suggestion would be to host a ‘podcast’ with Adam geeking out with friends of his (almost like a very relaxed version of the talking room). This could be infrequent and not on a schedule of any kind. It would allow those who enjoy the occasional guest host to be content without upsetting those who enjoy the ‘Adam Show’.

Of course, this doesn’t solve the problem you may have when multiple people are busy and can’t make time to record a podcast. Perhaps filming more in advance and keeping up a backlog of non-time-sensitive topics for times like that could be useful.

Just my two cents, if anyone is interested. Keep up the great work guys!

  7. Easily one of the worst podcasts I’ve ever heard. I suffered through the sycophantic name-dropping hoping to hear something interesting. Then… the podcast was over. WTF was that?

  8. I really enjoy Still Untitled however I have to say I did not enjoy this one. I’m also in the “Please stop name dropping and talk about something interesting” column. I consume this content on YouTube those comments are a lot more savage but are echoing the same opinion.

I listen because you all talk about interesting content and share insightful stories and perspectives on technical/artistic/cultural topics. This cast was not the worst of the name dropping network sessions and some of the stuff was actually funny but I had to comment because its some times a trend.

The casts with Simone were awesome by the way, I like that you are bringing in new people but some of the people don’t occupy the topic space that myself and I think other listeners enjoy.

    +1 to this.

This was lots of fun, and I’d love to see Rebecca as a regular guest.

  10. I might catch flack for this but I have to sound off in the I just don’t care for Rebecca column. To be honest I don’t subscribe to this content to listen to politically charged individuals brag. I’m sure she’s a perfectly nice person in real life but not one I want to spend my limited free time listening to.

  11. I seem to recall Edward James Olmos banging on Aaron Douglas’ door and yelling “Chief” “Chief” before abruptly leaving.

  12. Yeah, I agree that the last couple of episodes have skewed too far into the white guilt and name dropping arenas. Not what I listen for; hopefully it’s an aberration and not a trend.

  13. Yea, um when did this podcast become the “Sanctimonious Liberals Talking Political Shit” show? What the hell is the mission statement for this web presence anyway? Please replace this redhead nut with Simone, because she is just a silly nerd who wants to experiment and have fun – which is why I visit this site myself. This country is flooded-enough with politics at the moment. Just my opinion, of course.

  14. Come on now, Adam’s politics are no secret. If you don’t agree with him and an episode goes into political territory, just skip that video. There is really no need to post something negative, and if you feel you have to, at least direct it at the topic being discussed rather than the person or perceived ideology as a whole.

Because face it, Tested is a personality driven site with two very loose-form podcasts that cover a wide range of topics within popular culture, as well as the hosts’ and guests’ personal experiences and anecdotes. Don’t be surprised if a: people discuss their personal beliefs, and b: they occasionally have guests whose personalities you don’t like as much as others.

  15. Yea…..um – the “topic being discussed” was supposed to be First Comic-Cons. Tell me how much of that we had here. I really don’t give a shit about Adam’s personal ideology…. or even the fact that he he is an egotist and a star-fucker. Just give us what is advertised. If Adam is going to be an unabashed Liberal – say it in the mission statement. Fine with me. I will move on. You say “Skip the video” when the title of the video is itself misleading? And also the description? My guess is you simply agree with ideology and not the premise of the complaint.

  16. Spoiler-alert: Tested video-titles are guidelines at best :p They topic-jump all over the place, especially when they have guests.

  17. I’m not sure how long you have been listening to Still Untitled, but if you’re a regular listener, you should be used to them going off subject. Frankly you should be used to them not even ever being on topic. The TITLE often is just a line from the talk or a snippet phrase. You say you, ” don’t give a shit about Adam’s personal ideology….”, but you still listen to this podcast? I’m rather confused at your rant.

Honestly I do think there was a lot of name dropping in this episode but how are you going to do a fan podcast surrounded around ComiCon hosted by famous people without dropping other famous peoples names? This is part of the fun of Tested, meeting other Geeky/Nerdy, famous people and learning about what makes them tic.

Norm, Adam, and friends keep up the work and I’ll keep listening. We up here in PDX listen to Tested at Bridgeport Brewery 2-3 times a week in the Kitchen and I play you guys in my Maker Shop, ZCor – Furniture, Lighting, Design

  18. I am not sure if you are familiar with the definition of “rant” but I don’t think my post rose to that level. And clearly a large number of watchers agree with my points. I have been a Tested subscriber for over 2 years and I rarely comment, but when I have an opinion then I shall post it. Now the title and summary indicated they were going to be talking about first Comic-Cons and fun encounters at conventions. That is why I clicked on it. I know Adam usually has fun and goes full out for the Con and was hoping to enjoy some pertinent stories. I don’t mind them going off-subject at all. For some reason Norm did little to steer things back, which is what he is known for. What I do mind is political commentary that seems to have nothing to do with Tested’s platform. Believe me, if Adam were a Christian Conservative and and he started preaching about Jesus, I would be on here protesting that. The Nerd Culture/Sci-Fi Geek/Maker/Tech space is composed of a cross-section of beliefs, not just West Coast Liberals. Adam can always form another platform in which he can discuss his politics. As I said, from the comments here and on the YouTube channel, many agree with my position. We shouldn’t “leave” Tested. Adam should understand that feedback counts too.

  22. “Sanctimonious Liberals Talking Political Shit” “I really don’t give a shit about Adam’s personal ideology…. or even the fact that he he is an egotist and a star-fucker.”

A prime example of level-headed, clear feedback there. Definitely not ranting. 🙂

But in all seriousness, yes, the community has all sorts… hell, I’d say it has room for all sorts, and that this exact thing is what makes it so great (that and the fact that discourse tends to be reasonably civil, at least on Tested). Personally, I find it is pretty easy to filter out content I’m not interested in or don’t want to spend time listening to, even on Tested. Sometimes that means pausing half-way through a podcast or video and finding something else to watch. No one has to “leave”, they just have to admit that not everything is for them.

  23. Yep, I was making it clear that although I think Adam has some personality downsides (many he has admitted), I still tune in because I think his contributions can be quite entertaining. This was simply an “off” episode for me.

And also yes about admitting not everything is for them. Hence the comment section. I have several friends who own restaurants and they take the comments on Yelp and Trip Advisor seriously. They engage with their patrons and make adjustments when necessary. If I were concerned about the “brand” that is Adam Savage, I would take note of the vitriol surrounding this guest.

I gave this episode a try and by the 10-minute mark I was perplexed. I zoomed to a few different spots further on and it didn’t seem to get much better.

I will likely continue watching, of course…. but I will skip episodes with the redhead. Of course, Simone was delightful, funny, intelligent and engaging and I will watch anything she shows up in. 🙂

  24. Still Untitled is my preferred podcast because I like listening to Adam talk about cool stuff in an often “bringing it home for the audience” manner. Adam buys $2000 Kylo helmet, and shows it off in detail so that people into costuming know what the gold standard looks like. He does the expensive thing, and shows us how to build/buy the cheap version so we can have or do it ourselves.

But this episode was so cringy, I even felt bad watching Norm get alienated; and why should I feel bad for Norm, he already basks in the glow of stars.
