Self Criticism – Still Untitled: The Adam Savage Project – 10/23/18

This week, Adam gives a little insight into the planning process of making a show and reflects on a frustrating hitch in a recent One Day Build video shoot. We talk about why being self critical is a good thing, and the feeling of imposter syndrome. Will tells us about an awesome Star Wars-inspired concert he attended, and we talk a little about Halloween plans. It’s that time of the year already!

  1. Jason Mantzoukas plays Derek.

If you like The Good Place you should listen to their official podcast, hosted by Marc Evan Jackson and interviewing the cast and crew each week.

  2. For Halloween I built a Mash up costume of Thanos and Buzz Lightyear. “To Infinity Gauntlet and Beyond” Below are some photos from the Mickey’s Not So Scary Costume at Disney World where I wore it. From initial idea (joke to my 9 year old) to the party, it was a two week build. There are things I would like to do differently, but for the quick build, I am happy with how it turned out. You can’t really see it in the black and white photo, but I embossed the butt pannel with (C) Marvel/Pixar… it’s the details that matter 🙂

  3. One of my first comments here on Tested was on the strength of Basil Poledouris’ score for Conan the Barbarian and how it carries the film in spite of some rather horrid acting and cheesy dialog. I would love to witness a live orchestra playing it over a silent cut of the film.

It is my all-time favorite score, above even Star Wars and The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

  4. This one went sideways which is great. Norm, I am so happy for you and Danica (sorry if I misspelled her name)!

  5. I don’t know if you guys read comments on Youtube anymore, but you might wanna do a podcast about cyber bullying next week. It’s getting out of hand, maybe if Adam talked about it they would start to feel stupid about their behavior (as sometimes can happen when you get confronted by someone you admire, Adam mentioned this once in a podcast).

Or maybe start moderating the YT comments (if that’s even possible with at this volume). You can ban people from commenting on your YT video’s right? Just slowly take the bullies out, one by one.

  6. Speaking of Errol Morris’s interrotron: it was invented specifically for his criminally-underappreciated-yet-massively-brilliant series First Person. There were a total of 17 half hour episodes, each interviewing a different person of note. If you ever get the chance to watch it, you should do so.

  7. When Adam said “Future me” I had a moment. I often refer to Future Me in the same context as he mentioned there. Future Me both loves and hates Current Me, often at the same time.

  8. I was just there the other day, and I was very surprised to see SO many people in costumes – I know it’s a halloween party, but it was far more than just parents with their kids! I was there with my wife and my daughter, and sadly had to go as “Guy who just got out of work,” but it was still a blast!

How well known is MNSSHP outside of the Disney community as a cosplay event? It might make a good Tested segment!!

  9. So over the years, I have attended more MNSSHPs then I would like to admit either as a Guest or working Cast… I remember going the first time with my now wife about 13 years ago, and we didn’t dress up; not knowing what it was really like. And like you, we realized how much fun it would be to be able to dress up, outside of going to club parties, (which isn’t really our scene) there really are not that many opportunities for adults to do this.

As for a true cos-play opportunity, there are some safety restrictions that can hinder the costume designs… no helmets, adult faces must be clearly visible, no prop weapons, nothing considered “too Scary”. You will see a lot of off the shelf costumes, mostly on kids, or generic themes like pirates. The creative designs are going to skew into the Disney fandom. The Haunted Mansion is quite popular, I once saw a group that dressed as a monrail. This year I saw a groups dressed as ”snacks around the world’… dole whips, Popcorn, Churros, etc…

My friend Alex and his group was featured on the Disney parks Blog for their Coco costumes: https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2018/10/disneyfamilia-cast-members-dress-up-as-disney-pixars-coco-for-mickeys-not-so-scary-halloween-party/

A few years ago, my oldest wanted to Dress as Rey, and my wife who was pregnant at the time wore a BB-8 Dress (since she was round like a ball… ha ha) My mother in law dressed up as Mas Catana, and my father in-law dressed at Han Solo. I really didn’t want to dress as an Episode 7 character because I thought that was too on the nose (or had one of those no-no helmets mentioned above)… So I decided to go as the old master himself:
