Antiques Roadshow – Still Untitled: The Adam Savage Project – 8/13/19

We’re joined in the cave this week by special guest Sam Farrell, a friend of Adam’s and the Senior Producer on Antiques Roadshow! We have a great chat with Sam learning about how the show is made, the appraisal process, and other questions we couldn’t wait to ask about this beloved series.

  1. The story about the ivory figure also sounded overly fanciful to me when Adam first gave us a tour of his shelves a few years ago. No doubt that it is the story/function told both to Adam’s grandfather and to the giver, but it sounds very unlikely. If you were of a class that had a custom artifact such as that, you’d find more convenient ways of communication with your physician. 🙂

That being said, I have heard a story of someone who wouldn’t let his doctor in to see him naked, so his valet had to convey the observations to the doctor, who was outside the room directing the examination. I am fairly certain it was on QI, which doesn’t have the most rigorous fact-checking, but still…

  2. That was one of the best interviews I’ve heard in a long time. Great job guys.

I’ve heard the story of the need for the ivory figure from someone else who said it came from Japan and was used for the purpose Adam mentioned.

  3. I don’t have info or reference shots of the Key to the Bastille, but I’d love to help Adam in some way with reproducing it. My primary focus at the moment with forging and metal working is handmade locks and keys. I love that kind of stuff. You can see what I’m currently working on and some of my past work on my instagram. My user name is greasyluckforge.

  4. Does anybody have the links to the articles and books they mention? When they say they will add that to the shows description, they should really do that… Or at least give the name of what they are mentioning so we can find out by ourselves.

  5. This is what I’ve got:

I think this is the article Adam Talks about the forger that gives the money away: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2013/08/26/the-giveaway

The book written by a forger Sam Farrell speaks about I think is Ken Perenyi’s Caveat Emptor

The long article about the Brewster Chair I couldn’t find, but I found one in The New York Times site that is close enough: https://www.nytimes.com/1977/10/27/archives/a-9000-antique-circa-1969.html

Armand LaMontagne is the name of the woodworker that made the chair. His article at wikipedia has a link for the article where he told the truth about the chair he made, but I can’t access it.

  6. My pleasure, sorry for not replying directly to your post, the site has a bug that gives me a 403 error every other time I try to do that and in five years or so I have been unable to figure out what causes/resolves it.
