Episode 152 – Apocalypse When? – 12/20/2012

On this week’s episode, Will checks the door, Joey delays his gratification, and Norm ponders the true meaning of Christmas. All that, plus the Instagram TOS kerfuffle, Google dominating iOS, Twitter archives, the year in review, the problem with gift guides, and the final fake outtakes of the year.

  1. This site redesign makes it much more enjoyable to visit the podcast page.

I guess it has been confirmed that Will and Norm have assimilated. Hearing that their Twitter history is mostly the same is amusing.

  2. Abner Ravenwood? You know, the new Blu-ray set is pretty great, and it may just have been too long since you guys have seen ‘Raiders.

  3. Great episode, Happy holidays and new years tested crew

If you need an excuse to go to Boston next year do PAX east in march im sure there’s a bunch of stuff there perfect for you guys to cover 🙂

I’m from the Philly area, there’s alot of historical stuff other then that nothing really jumping out at me right now. if i find anything interesting ill send some tips.

  4. There is an option in amazon to turn off browsing history or delete items from it. That should adjust the recommendations

  5. I’m pretty sure that Adam does in fact have a Indy Sr. Journal that he made. He made like 10 of it and used the spares for prop-trades. Not sure where I heard him talk about it, but its out there somewhere.

    Edit: found this,

Edit2: Yes, Will, lithography does basically mean “stone writing”, referring to the original lithography printing plates being stones that were ground flat. Offset-lithography is the leading printing technology today, but sadly no stones involved. 🙂

Great episode, thanks for a year of awesome content, guys.

  6. So I wonder if they know that Spotify has a private session option

This. you guys are supposed to know this stuff!

  7. I was one of the people who waited till the Google Maps app was released to upgrade my iPhone 4S to iOS 6. Being able to update apps without entering my password is the only useful feature I’ve come across so far.

  8. So Will, if Norm were to wear his Avengers shirts, would he then be Avenged Sevenfold? Or would simply being gifted them do?

These are the mysteries awaiting us in 2013!

Great job guys and thanks for all insightful content, less so for the less insightful content ;oP

  9. Japanese gets good compression for a number of reasons. I’m no expert so anybody fluent can feel free to correct me.

Here is the Golden Tweet in question. I’ve highlighted the kanji in it, those are the meaning-densest part. Each solo or pair is likely a whole word. And it’s exactly 140 characters too.

  10. Hopefully they can get Gary in for the first show of the year. I don’t think it would be too late for 2013 predictions then.

Compression from names too, assuming it’s a Japanese name or the name is shorter when written in katakana.

  12. I don’t have a suitable microphone to mail in a proper question, but I still have a “would you rather” for you guys.

So, you know the classic ‘horse-sized duck or 100 duck-sized horses and the recently resurrected ‘bat vs knife’ ones? I’d like to combine those two. Would you rather defend against one bat-sized knife or a hundred knife-sized bats?

How are they attacking you? I dunno… they’re haunted or something. Tiny invisible aliens, or maybe Jedis or tractor beams. Whatever. They float and attack you until you either die or trap them.

  13. The lower receiver is the bit that lets you change the action of the rifle. The “action” is how the rifle feeds and fires, therefore you could make a full automatic weapon in your home. I assume that’s the real worry, because making a gun isn’t that big of a deal when you need a $2000 machine to make a rifle that would probably cost you $1000-$1500, and it’ll work about 30% of the time and last at most 30 rounds.

Considering that the barrel of a military assault rifle can rupture violently just because of some water or grit in there, I don’t think that 3D printing is going to be an effective way of doing anything but getting yourself killed when the round going off just explodes the thing in your hand after the nth shot.

Hell, my Airsoft rifle has trouble feeding BBs with a semi-automatic action, and it’s mostly made of metal.

I don’t think metal 3D printing will be easier and cheaper than available options any time soon. It’ll be a long ass time before 3D printing is accessible to actual people that could create a gun or any part of a gun that functions properly.

You could argue that it only needs to make one shot, and that’s true, but you know what? You can buy pretty much the same handgun that the Marine Corps uses pretty easily and for about $600. I’d like to see someone make a 3D printer that can make so much as one of those little Lego missile launchers.
