Episode 171 – Soft Gs For Everyone! – 5/23/2013

This week, Will, Norm, Gary, and Brad discuss Bieber’s monkey, pronunciation, HTC’s woes, the new Flickr, and Yahoo’s acquisition of Tumblr. That’s it. Nothing else at all. Only those things, and absolutely nothing else.

  1. On the one hand, it’s a double feature of Brad and Gary! On the other hand, will says Jif again, which we all know how that’s going to go.

  2. Gary and Brad in one podcast is perhaps the greatest team-up to ever occur in the history of history.

  3. …Gary AND Brad? IT’S CHRISTMAS COME EARLY. Assuming you guys didn’t spend 30 minutes whining about the xbox reveal.

  4. Also, it’d be ridiculous for the Xbone to only accept MS sold externals because they are going to just be plain jane USB 3.0. Also, 500GB for a drive dedicated to gaming, when games are easy to uninstall and reinstall? That’s fine. Plenty of PC people have SSDs that are smaller than 500 and get by just fine. I have a LOT of Steam games installed about my library is around 500GB. I’m sure most console gamers won’t need to have 100 games installed or whatever.

And we have no idea what the fee will be or how it’ll interact with the trade in program or any of the other stuff. For all we know if could be a small discount (perhaps based on digital purchases being slightly cheaper than retail purchases) or it could be 50% or it could be full price or it could be $3.

Also, will saying he tries not to be cynical is LAUGHABLE. I’m sorry, but there has been such a shit storm of punks this last week being complete cynical idiots that I cannot put up with this crap. You love being a cynical asshole Will. Just admit it. Even when you were busy saying Windows 8 wasn’t that bad, you were also saying it was shitty and horrible for the same reasons as everyone else.

And Will, MS isn’t going to NOT show stuff on the internet. Believe it or not, there are a lot of people in their demographic that watch that stuff on facebook or whatever. Seriously, look at one of the “Facebook streams” and the chats are full of bros and idiots and the every man that this stuff was directed at. And if you can’t see the need to get the announcement of what is no longer a game console but is now an entertainment system before the gaming-centric event, you need to open your eyes.

  5. Wow, the completely inaccurate discussion of the PS4 and Xbox One APU dies was really cringe inducing. Hey, an APU from AMD is by definition a single die. Jaguar cores and GPU shaders are organized into modular blocks. Both the PS4 and Xbox One use two standard 4 core Jaguar modules. They are not separate dies.

  6. Yes we are the uneducated bunch for not referring to an image as a brand of peanut butter or saying eggzekutuble.

    Source?

Wikipedia describes it as a single die.

  8. The discussion was forever ruined the moment we began arguing over an acronym, which is entirely arbitrary and pronounced by convention and habit, especially if people only read it and then years later pronounce it how they think it sounds. And no, what the creator says is merely superficial. The standard escaped his grasp decades ago in how people consumed it so yeah, pointless to keep bringing him up.

While both pronunciations are valid because that’s how language and culture works, precisely because of that people can still infuse their social values and stratify/judge someone based on what they pick. In fact we do it all the time and this argument’s persistence owes this common factor of human social evaluation and communication.

On a different note, odd how these things sort of just flare up and catch on. A weird world of internet indeed.

Wikipedia is not a source. What source does Wikipedia list?

The console clearly has all its APUs on a single package, you can tell that from the wired photos. Semiaccurate is saying it’s a monolithic die, but that’s the only source I’ve found.

    Hey Will, I believe he is referring to this;

    http://www.vgleaks.com/durango-cpu-overview/

Yes, I know it’s VGLeaks, but the leaks they published regarding both the PS4 and Xbox One turned out to be nigh on 100% accurate (down to #s of different processing units, types of on-die RAM, etc – I think they only thing they got wrong was the amount of ram on the PS4). Even items which were not disclosed during press conferences/releases have been semi-proven by extrapolations from the architecture panel held after the event.

eg; http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-spec-analysis-xbox-one (I believe Ars had something similar as well)

That said, I haven’t listened to the podcast yet – so I assume yall do a good enough job to be passable considering the event only just happened.

  10. On the pronunciation of GIF. Both are correct, it’s pronunciation belongs to language not the creator the second it fell into common usage. And by extension both ways of pronouncing the word are in usage enough that both should be acceptable. In other words the only people that are wrong about the pronunciation are the people that are arguing about it.

In some parts of the world Jif was brand of bathroom cleaner, was later renamed Cif. Also Jif is currently a brand of lemon juice in the UK and can be bought in a yellow plastic lemon container for some reason. Normally I would finish a podcast before commenting but ah well.

  11. Instantly 1000 times better podcast with Gary to tell Will how it is! And Brad on top of that. YES.

Wait, did Gary leave the podcast regular?

If you check the podcast page you will see that Gary has been on like 3 podcasts this year. Sadface.

  12. This GIF seems to show the Kinect demo was pre-recorded. Also, if it was live, where was the Kinect camera on stage?

  13. It feels very misleading Microsoft calling the triggers “force feedback” instead of haptic or rumble. The best feature about the PS3 controller’s triggers for driving is also the worst feature about them for shooting: the resistance increases as you push them in. I like driving games with the PS3 controller a LOT more than with the 360 controller, and vice-versa with shooters all because of the triggers. Having proper force feedback in the Xbox One controller would have solved one of the top three problems the 360 controller suffered from.

Everything except the shape of the thumbstick tips makes me think the PS4 controller will actually be better than the Xbox One controller. I’d rather have the tactile transducer that lets me feel a sound channel (like D-Box or a Buttkicker) than a couple more low quality linear motors in the triggers.

  14. Xbox One alternate name suggestion, in case xbone isn’t your thing:

    Xone. Pronounced like zone…

  15. David Cutler, who designed the XONE’s Hyper-V OS, is the father of Windows NT and Windows Azure.

  16. Are you actually trying to imply that every single client calculates the trajectory of every single bullet fired in Battlefield 3, regardless of whether it was from your own gun or not? Sorry dude, but that stuff is done by the server, which would be considered an offloaded task. Will is right.

  17. The reason people are so upset with the XONE is due to all the anti-consumer measures. Not that they didn’t show games.

  18. That’s not what MS is claiming about cloud compute to the press right now.

Anyway, as pointed out above the VGLeaks.com information about Xbox One has in essence proven to be directly from official developer documentation. If you’d like information from Sony Mark Cerny describes the PS4 APU here

The CPU and GPU are on a “very large single custom chip” created by AMD for Sony. “The eight Jaguar cores, the GPU and a large number of other units are all on the same die,” said Cerny. The memory is not on the chip, however. Via a 256-bit bus, it communicates with the shared pool of ram at 176 GB per second.

I’m not sure why you’re confused about what an APU is. AMD has been making them for a while. The whole purpose of their Fusion agenda was to leverage single die benefits, and both the Xbox One and PS4 chips are being called APUs or Systems on a Chip officially and publicly.

For example this tweet from AMD last week:

The Xbox One is here, and it’s being powered by a single-chip, semi-custom APU co-developed by AMD and Microsoft.http://bit.ly/12sgn7K

  19. The reason people are so upset with the XONE is due to all the anti-consumer measures. Not that they didn’t show games.

I wish that was true, but go to Giantbomb, and you’ll find a million threads with as many vague complaints about how the event that wasn’t for gamers was… shocker: “not for gamers.”

Also? We have no fucking CLUE what the anti-consumer measures will actually be, and assuming we do is almost as bad as being the company who so royally fucked up that message. lol. That’s the thing we have anything to complain about, it’s how shitty they’ve been about clarifying what those features will actually be. Because right now, they are saying “we haven’t actually officially said what we are doing.”

Also, if the used game thing is your primary concern, I hope you have a better excuse than “I’d rather let GameStop take advantage of gamers AND developers despite doing nothing more than capitalizing on basically a loophole in how games have been sold for all of this time, than let publishers fix that weakness without actually screwing people over.” Because if you want a game to be cheap, you wait. You want to play it? Buy it, don’t borrow it. Vinny said it better than I could on the Bombcast, basically asking why people think that we should be defending a practice that really only benefits Gamestop instead of letting the people who make out games get some more money out of doing it to bring more capital to developers. How dare they want you to pay THEM for what they worked on. The idea that gamers suddenly own the data because they have a disc is ludicrous. So the idea that reselling it is totally okay but protecting your company from losing money to people other than you making money on your product? How dare they! It’s a game. If you can’t afford it, you should be doing something other than playing games, or you should be encouraging your countrymen to rally against the prices in your region. Not whining about how expensive they are. Entertainment isn’t required to be affordable. It’s not a basic human right. If you can earn it, good for you. If not, there’s only one thing you can do: work harder and maybe then you’ll get to play shiny new games. Otherwise, wait 6 months and buy it new for $30.

Oh, and we have no idea about the PRO-consumer moves either. Remember, they still have a trade in system they have yet to talk much about, and we still have no idea how pricing will work on the store (such as degrading value on older games, similar to Steam) which is another thing that’s been suggested to be a thing on the new Xbox.

The always online thing is totally okay to get up in arms about. Until you realize the only person who really made any statements at MS was literally pulling numbers out of his ass. Seriously, people were getting different times from the same guy. And I forget if it was a rumor or a statement, but supposedly there will be options for military bases and the like (Which there effing better be!) even if the always online thing is oppressive. Which we don’t know it will be.

If you mean privacy because of the Kinect? You should probably just go live in the Amazonian Jungle because surprise surprise, you’ve got 4 cameras within 30 feet of you in all likelihood, and probably have one with a microphone and constant connection to the outside world/internet in your pocket during most of your day.

The idea that they are going to start spying on people is just a bullshit excuse for people to give them more shit, because Gamers have become borderline addicted to being, quite frankly, sort of -insert a word that Vinny may or may not have used that starts with a C-….s. You want to know why we can’t have nice things? Because gamers are insufferable little pricks these days. They just tear everything apart if it doesn’t give them a massage, go down on them, and make them a delicious dinner WHILE ALSO giving them free games for life.

They often refuse to accept the fact that in life, you earn what you earn, and nothing more. They often refuse to work for and support the enjoyment of the industry they are so invested in. They don’t want to have to buy things from the people who worked on on them, they just want everything to be cheaper and easier to get and most importantly if they can’t buy it from their best bud who did nothing to deserve that money back on their purchase (hey bud, sandwiches are physical commodities too, you don’t see me reconstituting it after it comes out and selling it for 1/3 of the price, do you?) other than “I played and enjoyed this game!” Well, good for you. I guess the folks who actually did the months of work to make the bloody game deserve that $20 significantly less than you.

  20. The issue isn’t really a used game issue to me it’s just not having the ability to trade games round with friends which is something I have done alot this generation, I feel people are going to be less likely to spend money on a less known game because they have no way and lending it to friends or selling it when they are done. This is one of the main reasons I love being a console gamer and if the Xbox One and PS4 are just going to use PC game style DRM I may as well just upgrade my PC, but if by some small chance PS4 doesn’t go down this route I have nothing holding me back getting a PS4. Would of been almost impossible to switch to Sony this generation if backwards compatibility was built in to the Xbox One but without that my hundreds of dollars of arcade games and retail games I downloaded onto my 360 will not carry over to the Xbox One and neither will I.

I could see MS saying “All games will have demos!” the way XBLA games do, now that it looks like they’ll all be downloadable. Which would get rid of the need to “trade around” to “see if you like it” before you “buy it.”

And please, stop the moaning about backwards compat. It’s almost never something that anyone actually does, never has been. Look at the measures that have had to be taken just to get it to work, with putting specialized hardware into next gen boxes, pushing up prices, yadda yadda. Meanwhile, if you have the games, you must have the console, so just hold on to the bloody thing.

  22. Ninefingers

I dunno, I could see that being Kinect jank of “He spread his arms! quick, do a zoom thing!”

Either way, we’ll know soon enough how much bullshit they were talking.

that’s just the clip of him stretching the video and then it reversed.

Meanwhile, if you have the games, you must have the console, so just hold on to the bloody thing.

But your missing the point completely, you are saying the only way I am allowed to finish a game is to pay full price for it, that’s completely crazy in this gaming generations late year release cycle. I like being able to trade around games with friends to play games I otherwise would never buy.

Why wouldn’t I complain about backwards compatibility, I have brought many games online that I love to go back to like Trials, Castle Crashers, Burnout Paradise, Dark Souls and Red Dead Redemption. Should of been something they should of got in the Xbox One, hard to really want to buy anything online any more if that is the way they are shown to treat it in the future.

These are completely valid concerns, pretty sure my Xbox is on it’s last legs and I will not buy another 360 when the next generation is coming out, so I guess those digital purchases are nothing but receipts on my Xbox Live account in the future, I would easily pay the extra $99 for built in backwards compatibility, I only have so many HDMI ports on my receiver.

  25. The PS1 was not more powerful than the N64, it had more storage because it used discs, but in power it did not beat it.

  26. So you still haven’t said why you’re entitled to not paying the people who make games for your games. If you don’t want to pay full price because you’re cheap or just poor, fine. Wait until the prices come down. It happens with pretty much any game that isn’t released by Blizzard. There should be a trade-off for you paying less for it, and there’s just no fair way to say that you deserve to save money for wanting something more than developers deserve to make money for actually doing work. Seriously, if you’re that selfish that you can’t bring yourself to either wait or spend an extra $10-20, it’s hard not to see you as a bit of a prick. People need to be paid for their work. No matter how cheap you are, someone had to make that game. And they probably worked longer hours than 80% of the people playing their games, they probably spent weekends during crunch working constantly, and you think, that just for absolutely no reason other than “Why not” or “cause I wanna,” you should have the option to just not pay for things or to provide others with a means to not pay for things? Or worse in my opinion, pay some middle man all of the fucking money for doing nothing more than exploiting a loophole. This is the industry closing that loophole. I’m sorry, but I just don’t see the “games are physical and should be tradeable, sellable, and edible!” That’s bullshit. It’s content you consume. In the future, that’ll be even more true when physical media becomes a thing of the past. Like it or not, this is where things are going, and for anyone who actually makes a job working on these things?

There is currenty no good way to off-load game computation to the cloud for performance, unless you’re talking about a turn-based game. Sorry, it’s just marketing hype.

Not true at all. It depends on the structure of the system. Plenty of games do server side calculations for things like physics or AI when using dedicated servers. You won’t be rendering the graphics or anything, but there are certainly ways to do stuff with cloud computing. If you’re making this assumption just because something like OnLive doesn’t work super well, you should remember that video and audio are a lot more intensive than just simple data. Harder to move quite as quickly. When you consider that something like a saved film from Halo is smaller than probably a couple of seconds of onlive gameplay, it’s not hard to imagine something like that happening. Pathfinding would be a good system for it, because it’s not a very latency reliant process. Generating stuff like lightmaps is another one. So yeah, there are definitely things that could be offloaded. Will it be some huge revolutionary thing? Probably not. Will it probably mostly be more in depth stat tracking or saved film style stuff? Probably. But there’s no reason that things couldn’t be offloaded to some extent.

  27. So you still haven’t said why you’re entitled to not paying the people who make games for your games. If you don’t want to pay full price because you’re cheap or just poor, fine. Wait until the prices come down. It happens with pretty much any game that isn’t released by Blizzard. Like it or not, this is where things are going, and for anyone who actually makes a job working on these things?

So i’m responsible for the death of Sega because I borrowed my aunty’s copy of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 as a kid…

I feel no guilt for hiring a game I wouldn’t usually buy, which I will be doing for many years to come thanks to MS for dropping their DRM policies. I sell my games online when I am done as well, so I can buy more games, weird science right? It may be hard for you to understand, but people have other things to worry about than spending $60 on games. And less with the insulting people over all things video games, chill out dude.

  28. Allow me to necro this, because I need closure on this issue.

To address your last message; yes, but that’s not what was sold. Why would you even try to market something that non-novel? You don’t and they didn’t. What they were selling was things like Crackdown’s offloaded physics, and possibly even rendering tasks.

Microsoft’s E3 2016 presentation is now over, and Crackdown — the one and only hope for the ‘power of the cloud’ this gen — was a no-show. In fact, it’s delayed into 2017. The same year they’re pushing out a new console, effectively ending ‘this generation’.

Crackdown has demo’d good, but ultimately the ‘power of the cloud’ they used to sell the Xbox One has failed to materialize, as expected.

Even if they manage to get Crackdown out there this side of the next console rollouts.. that’s one game. One game of hundreds (thousands) that have been released since they tried to sell us on these lies.

As you’re probably aware, they’ve now officially announced their ‘Project Scorpio’, which is all about delivering power to the client itself by massively increasing its GPU power. Says everything you need to know about the idea of moving on-line compute to the cloud for games.

(Special thanks to Don Mattrick whose TV-centric ideas essentially forced Microsoft to push these ideas in desperation)
