Podcast - This Is Only a Test

Episode 172 – Put a Hat On It – 6/6/2013

On this week’s show, Norm regales the gang with tales of Switzerland, Gary regales the gang with tales of New York, and Will really nails the intro. All that, plus WWDC rumors, a handful of Computex announcements, Omni VR, the EFF’s podcast patent troll fight, E3 preparations, and a whole lot more. If you’re looking for the tech news, just skip ahead to the one hour mark.

  1. No offense to the other podcasters, but Tested is always best when the WNG is in control.

The most interesting news over the past week has been the new coverage of the patent troll fights. I especially enjoyed the updated patent troll coverage at This American Life and the decision in yet another Apple vs Samsung battle.

I wish there was an easy way for Tested to cover the importance of patents in the tech industry. I wonder if the US Patent Office would allow Tested to get some first hand info from the people who actually approve patents.

  2. Caillou totally sucks.

    Hipster=

    PBR

    cheap nasty sunglasses

    Thrft store clothing

    Ironic facial hair.

  3. Man, I wish cobblers were still a thing. I have size 16 EEEE feet and I can’t find any decent casual shoe. I either have to go dress shoes or gym shoes (specifically only New Balance). I have heard their are people in China who will send materials to cast your foot for a few hundred dollars and then you can use that template to get custom shoes made for you but it is just an extreme bummer. If I just had one extreme or the other it would be cool, but giant wide feet are the worst.

  4. there are cobblers, you just have to look. granted, I get by with 13 5E’s (I’ve worn New Balance shoes since… the early 90’s – not nearly as good as they used to be, either) but for boots I have to go to a specific store south of Houston that has an actual foot casting of mine on record and they start from that. Big expense but the boots have lasted me nearly ten years now and they’re just getting to the ‘worn out’ stage.

  5. Love that Gary is back! Also, I’ve noticed it for a while but it really needs to be said: Will, you talk about Justin Beiber more than TMZ. The only Justin Bieber news that hits my ears or eyes each week comes from you.

  6. I’m so happy that Gary is on the podcast. Finally some colorful language. He didn’t disappoint. I support nonsense!

Also, Gary goes to the city with “the best food in the world” (hyperbole anyone?) and eats hot dogs and meatballs. Oh well, he is from the UK after all. I never understood eating comfort food when you want to enjoy good food, but to each his own, I guess.

    Edit:

So is Gary back on the podcast for the foreseeable future or only temporary?

    Edit2:

    A HAT FOR THE PENIS.

  7. Gotta love Will’s consistency.

Argues about the “correct” pronunciation of “gif” and then later mispronounces “Carnegie” and “entendre”.

  8. Your penis, Will. They were laughing about putting a hat on your penis, not the Kinect.

And you’re probably thinking of Superman throwing his S shield at the Kryptonians. That…is not canonical.

  9. A few months ago I got a twin Serta “Euro top” mattress w/ boxspring for $530. Turns out if you just don’t give a fuck you can get a pretty nice mattress for a reasonable price.

  10. the quick-pull laces have been around for a long time on snowboard boots. Now the big thing is the boa lacing system, that they apparently put on everything now (even medical braces and prosthetic legs). They make some shoe with them as well.

when camping an mattress is kinda overkill, but I do use one of these…

    http://www.rei.com/product/778152/rei-camp-bed-35-self-inflating-pad

That one is more on the expensive side. Its much better than laying directly on the tent floor. You just unroll it and let it sit for a few minutes and it fills with air.

obviously i made it past the gif part.

  11. Love the chaotic format of this Podcast. So often I listen to radio or podcasts and the formatting is predictable. Great to hear Gary is successful at what he loves and I am glad he is back for at least a little while. Great show guys keep it up.

  12. I’ve found the mattresses at CostCo to be a good deal (they will have a coupon a couple times a year). My sister has spent $4,000+ on Sterns & Foster and still ends up replacing it about every 7 years. So if I buy a CostCo mattress for $700 every 5 years it seems like a good deal.

  13. Okay, first of all, mattresses are NOT that expensive Will, and second of all of course things are more expensive. Everything is!

I can sell you a really sharp knife for like, $300 that would fix that right up.

  15. Submit that mattress myth to Mythbusters for me! “A mattress will double in weight over 10 years of use.”

    I’m highly doubtful it’s true.

  16. A good example in support of the hard g pronunciation of GIF is the word “gerrymander.” The accepted pronunciation for gerrymander is with a soft g (“jerrymander”), despite the fact that the man for whom the practice was named (19th century Massachusetts governor Elbridge Gerry) pronounced his name with a hard g (“garry”). Thus, the original intent of the coiners of a word as to its pronunciation is not determinative of the ultimate socially accepted correct pronunciation. Hard g fo life.

  17. As a person who didn’t give a shit about medival succession laws until playing Crusader Kings II, Paradox should make their next game about patent hoarding or the physics of particle smashing.

It would get a bunch of people to care about a complex, important thing.

But you guys should totally try to delve into that arcane world of patents.

  18. You mean the part about the Justin Timberlake fedora wasn’t an intentional “Dick in a Box” reference? That makes it even funnier.

  19. The best thing on the Vita is 2012’s highest rated console game with more than a handful of reviews – Persona 4 Golden.

  20. Garry got one thing right about Caillou–every parent other than him HATES that little French Canadian MFer. Most of the programs on Sprout are great, and I agree with Garry’s recommendation of the Goodnight Show, 64 Zoo Lane is a key component to my 16 month old’s sleeping process. Pretty much everything on Sprout is solid, the only rule in our house is a)no Barney, and b)no Caillou.

  21. So catching up on the podcasts after a long time away from the site… I find it funny that Obama is complaining about patent trolls being a danger to americans’ patents, while at the same time he pushed for first to file. :/

    slow clap.
