  1. The UK officially uses the SI units in most official capacities, the only exception that comes to mind is road distances.

Imperial units are still common in day-to-day use, and no one except the Brits know what the fuck a stone is.

Only the US, Burma and Liberia use imperial units as their official system of measurement.

  2. I have had the “hey you should leave for school/ work” many times on my galaxy nexus. I have also gotten it for a couple of meetings.

  3. Is the video version of the podcast coming up soon?

/edit just saw the comments on Wills twitter “Video will come when YouTube wills it, assuming I remember.”

  4. There is a big difference between “Made in America” and “Assembled in America.”

If the Moto X has amazing battery life I would be interested but it sounds like it has a bad screen and it’s the same price as the HTC One. Why buy it? I guess the voice stuff and different colours are cool but I’m not going to buy it for that.

  5. Man… During that android discussion was the first time I’ve ever wanted to tell norm to shut the hell up. Just the worst tone of voice I’ve ever heard from him…. The arguments are valid, but dude….

  6. As one of your resident Britishers: there is indeed a speed limit in the UK (or “England” as Will likes to call it for some reason ;)). We use mph, not kph. Speed limit is 30mph in built up areas, 60mph most other places and up to 70mph on motorways and some dual carriageways. You are probably thinking of Germany, as I think you realised! A stone is 14 pounds. I weigh 13 stone which is a bit too much for someone not quite 6 feet tall :'(. I am failing at my attempts to get back down to 12. We are increasingly also using kilogrammes for weight. 13 stone is roughly 80 kg, which sounds better to me for some reason. A fortnight is 14 days. There you go! I’m helpful! Hurrah!

Can’t wait for you guys to come to the UK (remember I sent in a question a month or two back suggesting it). We will sit you down in the best pub in London and tell you everything you ever wanted to know about units of measurement across Europe. It will be great!

  7. Try using tabcasting from a windows PC. My 2013 MBA looks all pixelated but when in boot camp or from a crappy old lenovo x120e tabcasting works great. I can even stream 720p local mp4 files in chrome with minimal slowdown.

  8. I get these too. It was really hit or miss at first and took awhile for Google Now to recognize my patterns but once it did it got a lot better.

It’s by no means perfect. Here’s a screen grab of it telling me to leave for work a half hour after it suggested I leave. Note the timestamp of the notification.

That was a few months ago and it’s gotten a lot better at it now. I live in the SF bay area and use BART to commute work every day. When BART went on strike last month it went as far as to notify me the service was down and suggested alternative transport options.

  9. More notes from a small island:

SKY TV: Sky are the dominant subscription TV network here in the UK. They cover everything from movies, to general entertainment, to news to sports. They syndicate shows and produce their own content. Rupert Murdoch is involved so you can probably guess where their news coverage sits editorially, but really they make most of their money from sports. Sky is virtually synonymous with football soccer on television here.

IMPERIAL MEASUREMENTS: People still generally use imperial measurements in day to day usage here. Metric tends to be used in industry and education. People are measured in feet and inches, TV screen sizes are sold in inches, beer and milk are sold in pints. Interestingly the weights and measures act dictates beer should be sold in imperial measures, while other laws dictate that soft drinks should be sold in metric amounts so if you go into a supermarket here you will see milk being sold in 578 ml bottles, which conveniently happens to be one pint.

Road distances are still measured and signposted in miles. Fuel economy is measured in miles per gallon, yet fuel is sold in litres.

A stone is 14 lbs. An easy way to picture what a stone is to think about professional boxing. In pro boxing once you get above lightweight, each weight category is half a stone heavier than the previous one. I presume in the US people tend to round their weight up or down to the nearest 10 lbs in every day conversation, in the UK it tends to be to the nearest stone.

  10. I agree with , Google not making Motorola a nexus manufacturer is not using that $12 billion purchase to its fullest and is stupid

I don’t think Samsung would survive if they make their own android fork. They can barely make their android skins usable, and now they’re going to take over a whole os? No way.

Also Wes is kinda hilarious. I apologize and take back anything snarky I ever said about him.

  11. Regular people (as in most consumers) don’t care about their phone’s OS. Vanilla or skinned.

What’s important is either hype, word of mouth, maybe usability, certainly stupid gimmicks, certainly not the tech things you care about.

Samsung is huge worldwide, can’t say about the US.

  12. You guys need to Test more before the solid condemnation of tab screening w Chromecast. It’s not awesome, but my WiFi router is nestled in my TV console, and tab streaming quality is not terrible. It’s laggy but not so bad. I’d absolutely watch Hulu with it. I can also read text of all shapes and sizes.

  13. Chromecast works well in YouTube and Netflix apps on my First-gen Nexus 7. Tab casting? The image seemed fine, though my Chromecast did apply an update before I actually tested this.

  14. A lot of your chromecast observations at flat out wrong.

It does take power from USB. It does not REQUIRE the wall wart. The three inch extension is HDMI not USB and that is for people that have backwards and not side facing HDMI ports.

In my experience I had no problems what so ever reading text on my LCD 1080p tv chromecast from my laptop. Norm could have been experiencing wifi issues. My chromecast is right next to my router.

The deal killer for me is no chromecast of Internet from mobile, only from pc.

  15. They can barely make their android skins usable, and now they’re going to take over a whole os? No way.

Sweeping statement alert. Give me Jelly Bean Touchwiz over iOS or any other version of non-stock Android anyday. (I run stock Android, but still)

Honestly, Touchwiz makes so little difference these days, you can ignore it almost entirely if you install Nova launcher. Only thing that intrudes is their notification & settings panes, as well as stock apps (like sms, which I dislike).

Here’s more sweeping statements for you:

Touchwiz sucks. The S-pen in the galaxy note is a great idea. All S-pen apps made by Samsung suck. ALL.

  17. I was going to say that same thing, I don’t own one yet but I’ve seen couple other overviews of it and most of his points were wrong from what I’ve seen.

    Cool.

  19. The Google Now “Time To Leave” does work and it creeped me out a bit the first time it popped up unexpectedly. If I put the address in the appointment on my calendar it will pop up to tell me when to leave from my location. (HTC One M7 – HTC ware)

  20. Ah, that makes sense now. I could never remember how to spell Mo. Luckily it isn’t very relevant to atmospheric chemistry.
