I’ve been using my office Mac Pro since 2008. This refresh is probably the happiest I’ve been during an Apple presser.

Can’t help but feel is trolling a little here; iCloud is used and understood pretty well by most of the older people I come into contact with. At the point where they are buying apps to use on an iPad themselves, asking them to go into their iCloud settings and flick the backup switch is trivial.
Fun discussion otherwise though, getting real excited for Octoberkast!
Just a couple of things about your comments about Maverics and OS X in general:
• You can have Safari save all passwords and not just the ones on sites that don’t forbid it by checking a box in the Passwords tab on Safari settings. (Safari 6.1 and up)
• You can save at least some of the window properties in Finder by hitting cmd+J and selecting “Always open in XXX-view. And setting the option to the way you want.
As a friend said: Apple has an iPad Air available next week which weighs the same as the Sony Xperia Tablet Z and is 10% thicker.

About the Mavericks battery life improvements:
I updated yesterday and I take my MacBook Pro Retina mid 2012 to university every day from 0845 to about 1400, and I use it to take notes and browse the web a bit between classes (and when the prof is really boring). I always charge it full the night before and use the battery when I’m out. Normally when Im home the battery has gone down from 100% to about 65% or so, but after I did the update today and I came home it was at 82%, I just saw the podcast and now its at 64%. The improvement seems to be quite good, at least if the percentage is accurate.
Totally agree with your friend The calendar in IOS7 is a huge step backwards. That is the thing that took me the longest to get used to.

I’ve seen the discussion about the Windows 8 price vs OS X Mavericks price several times. It’s completely disingenuous to say they are equivilent. Windows 8 was a huge overhaul of Windows, perhaps the biggest and most noticeable change since the early days of Windows. Mavericks is to OS X what 8.1 was to Windows 8. And that’s not to say it’s not awesome that they’ve made it free, it’s just that I’m a little tired of hearing people arguing that Apple are much more generous and kind to their users than Microsoft, and the associated contortions of truth and subjectivity required to support such an argument. Microsoft are not evil cartoon monsters trying to steal your lifeforce, and Apple are not altruistic visionaries raining wonder and love on everyone just because they can.
It’s great that it’s free, I just don’t think they should be trying to score points against Microsoft. It just looks silly.

Seconded. Used macs for years and the reality is none of the OSX releases have really been substantial to the extent of a MS windows release, and frankly charging for what were pretty much yearly service packs was just downright cheeky IMHO. Releasing mavericks for free is principally about getting as much of the mac user base on the same operating system standard, which makes life a hell of a lot easier for OSX software developers and Apple themselves moving forward, as well as getting more users into the app base. Given how little benefit there was to upgrading to the latest OSX version our IT guy was largely leaving machines with the one they had installed and only upgrading when hardware driver/software application necessity demanded it. Now of course, assuming software compatibility it substantial then there’s a good case for upgrading everyone’s OS. Effectively it’s an OSX reset button.
