Episode 194 – A Very Special Episode of TIOaT – 11/21/2013

This week, Will and Norm are joined by Gary Whitta and Jeff Green. They discuss the Playstation 4, the last week of pre-Xbox One news, the rise of videogame streaming, the iPad Mini w/ Retina’s display problems, Jeff’s colonoscopy, and Oxford Dictionary’s word of the year. All that, and a lot more nonsense on this week’s show.

  1. There’s actually a few bands like dream theatre that makes conceptual albums, so the entire album is a narrative as a whole (IN ORDER).

So reordering tracks of an album UNACCEPTABLE.

All being said, I am a musician and not many of us can afford the luxury of thinking in term of LPs.

The music industry as moved on and albums have become a compilation of singles sadly…

  2. I’ve got an old man story too. I was at my local train station with my daughter (age 6) and by the staircase which leads to the bridge that crosses the tracks is a mysterious ladder. The ladder goes to a hole in the ceiling.

Now I used to work at the station and my daughter knows this so she asked me where the ladder went to. It goes to the large clock tower (think like a half sized Big Ben) so I told her that in Victorian times, the station was built in 1848, most people didn’t have a watch but they needed to know what time it was in order to catch their trains so the companies had to build clock towers to show the time.

“Couldn’t the people just use their phones?” she asked. I have to confess it was very cute.

  3. As a guy living happily without a cell phone, the world sometimes feels as though it has been invaded by another species. The phones are your new masters. CONSUME.

  4. I love the idea of a Python reunion with exclusively new material. They are all still funny guys. I got my intro to Python as a 6-7 year old watching tv in the middle of the night and catching episodes of Flying Circus, mind blown.

  5. One of the benefits I’ve noticed after getting my Galaxy Note 3 is I don’t carry my phone everywhere anymore because of the size. It’s been very refreshing.

  6. FYI, you cannot manage your HDD manually on XB1. The machine will do it for you but there’s no HDD management app at all.

  7. I love vinyl records. I hope they never go away.

Also, regarding the Netflix thing, they started doing the Max thing about 5 months ago on PS3. Never really seemed to work for me. Also, it feels like You Don’t Know Jack because it is the same guy who does You Don’t Know Jack.

  8. can we please please stop having the same conversation involving the same people about how twitter is bad and phones are bad ect ect. I don’t necessarily disagree but I swear this 40min conversation happens in 80% of episodes; and reaches the exact same conclusions. Please restrain yourselves the next time this topic comes up because I guarantee you your listeners are over it. Otherwise I love the podcast keep it up!

  9. Love during the “Next-Gen” chat, he really couldn’t have cared less. Hardly said a word during this whole thing and just did his own thing on the Macbook.

  10. I really want to get a used Wii or a new WiiU to play old NES/SNES games, but tying games to the hardware is the only reason I do not.

  11. To me PS4 and Xbox one with my Internet speed that’s only 0.4mbs and with a monthly cap of 100gb is going to be a big pain. seeing that it’s going to rely a lot on streaming and the fact that it’s going to take 200 to 300 hrs to download a single 50gb game

  12. most turntables these days have a switch to output either phono or line level. If you are looking for a receiver with phono input, there are many receivers out there that have an input labeled phono that is actually just a line level input labeled as such, beware!

As far as systems go, why wouldn’t you want something that looks like a/v equipment? I would love to have systems that would stack nicely with my receiver, in fact I would even go rack mount if I had the choice.

  13. Great podcast.

Weirdly enough me and my friends got together on Thursday night and played Artemis. Oh man, probably the best time I have had gaming ever. We did 5 bridge members + a captain and we are planning on getting 12 people and doing 2 ships co-op and PVP. if you have a seventh person, an XO who can walk around and direct your crew members is great and let the captain worry about the bigger picture strategy.

  14. I’m old school and sort of regard all albums as being as they ought to be. So almost always I listen to an album from start to finish, in order. I think I’ve learned this from listening to a lot of classic prog and stuff, but the tradition is alive and well in the underground. Post rock and all of its offshoots and related genres rely heavily on the album as opposed to the song. Even on albums where there’s no clear theme or narrative running through, I still tend to listen this way. I never bought the whole “I skip these three songs every time,” kind of attitude. When there’s songs I’m less into, that sort of spaces out the ones I do enjoy, provides a vital context to them.
