  1. Next time you’re here in Chicago you should go to Johnnie’s Beef (arguably the best beef in town), or Superdawg at Milwaukee and Devon on the north side (not far from American Science and Surplus). There are so many better options for “traditional Chicago food” rather than the gimmicky chain places…

As far as arcades, you should stop by Headquarters Beercade, tons of awesome arcade games and a huge selection of craft beers.

  2. Rail gun test firing has been going on on Nuclear powered ships for quite a while, usually with little success and a lot of cost. This rail gun projectile is probably using a guidance system similar to Excalibur both developed by BAE SYSTEMS. The latter survived 1000G overpressure test firings hitting targets at over 30 miles, (general combat range 14 miles)

  3. Taking a break for “a word from our sponsors”? Is Ovaltine sponsoring the podcast? I understand you have to have ads, but in the middle of the show? Come on, I thought we had moved past this. Old man ranting almost over, but having the ad in the middle makes no difference in my listening of the ad, or using the advertised product, but really lowers my enjoyment of the show.

  4. Pretty sure advertising in the middle of the show costs a lot more than having an ad at the beginning or the end.

  5. I was about to post the same thing. Placement can make a huge difference. There is a reason why most podcasts do mid-show ads and why many even weave the start of ads right into conversation (The Nerdist and Penn’s Sunday School are two podcasts I listen to that do this).

  6. The Homeworld games were, and still are, awesome. Still got the discs for these somewhere, but I’m definitely going to be getting the remasters.

  7. to come full circle with the ’11 octoberkast, Will has still not given up hope on making ‘are you siri?’ a thing. Norm told him several times back then it wouldn’t work.

  8. I got my daughter a Kuril pad at two ever sins she has being sliding every surface she can get here hands on TV included.

  9. I realize the site needs to produce some income and adds lead to more content. However I’m not impressed with the handling of it so far. The integration and presentation is very difficult to accept, particularly that comically insincere music and false made-for-radio banter. I would prefer to see more carefully chosen products, things related to the sites content and audience. The incongruity is troubling as it suggests desperation or a lack of effort or consideration for the audience and the burden of trust and patience required to endure non-content material.

  10. I’m curious, which ads that have played on Tested do you think *haven’t* related/appealed to their content/audience?

  11. For me, the two stand out examples would be the mattress ad in a recent Still Untitled and in this episode Skillfeed. I couldn’t actually recall the product in this episode and had to locate it. In hindsight I would agree that its not a bad match, however the delivery had a strongly negative effect both on the show and the product. Had the discussion turned naturally to the subject of Skillfeed and the banter less scripted, then I may have been interested. The mattress add, although arguably universal, it is several degrees removed from the specific nature of this site in my opinion.

I think for me the feedback I shared was largely focused on the presentation in hopes that it will improve future attempts.

Again I’m not opposed to adds, even encourage them if they bring content. I personally would prefer a different approach.

If I had to site two alternative methods, I’d recommend the Element 14 advertisement integration into the Ben Heck Show or any even the topical interview style found on MyClassicCarTv. The adverts in the MyClassicCartv even standalone as informative and useful because of their very close adherence to the content as well as putting the burden of salesmanship on the product owner instead of leveraging directly my trust of this show’s hosts.

  12. Google Now has an always on function which allows you to “OK Google” without unlocking your phone. You only need the screen on. That combined with double tap to wake and a Bluetooth speaker, you have a very good substitute to echo. “OK Google, play ‘artist, song, etc.'” integrates with Google play music extremely well. You can set multiple timers, add calendar events, make notes and more. The only inconvenience is needing to double tap the screen of your sleeping phone.

  13. I’ll give you the mattress one :p I’d say Skillfeed is a great fit, though. And the integration didn’t really bother me at all, but maybe I’m used to that style of placement from other podcasts.

  14.   Actually I think the mattress ad could have been more interesting to the subscribers here if there was a bit more highlighting of how this mattress company intends to entirely disrupt the traditional sales model and improve the buying experience. For example, watch the video Techcrunch did on the same company. http://techcrunch.com/2014/05/25/getting-in-bed-with-mattress-startup-casper/ I found it to be pretty interesting, considering the mundane topic of mattress sales. I thought the ad here, though, wasn’t much different from a Sleepy’s ad or similar.

  15. Wait… You guys are doing adds in the middle of the cast now? I thought one of the reasons for premium was to help with costs of doing these podcasts??? I don’t really mind the ads at the beginning and end of the casts but right in the middle? I’m just confused.

  16. re: Railgun.

Metal Gear Solid had a good explanation for them that I think holds true. The projectile you shoot from the rail gun is essentially a hunk of metal. Without guidence electronics or rocket or payload it would be impossible to track/target with any type of AA equipment. The lack or EMP or heat coming from the projectile the “hunk” of metal could potentially get past any modern defenses simply by being a little backwards.
