You were pretty close on the Eurovision Song Contest, but it isn’t new, it has been around for decades. Also there is no crazy nationalistic support for the competitors, because you can’t vote for your own country. And I think the public interest in this has been decreasing in the past years, at least here in Germany.
The new pebble screen is normally called a memory lcd, the are a cool technology.
Just a thought…. if your drone package delivery is based on an impact sensor… what happens when it hits something unexpected, like a lightning rod or the apex of a roof? Does your package get a premature release and just fall the rest of the way??

Here in the Netherlands I personally don’t know anyone who is really interested in the whole thing, but the media is all over it, once the singer and their song get announced months before, you’ll hear the F-ing song everywhere, all the time. The only way to escape it is to never leave your hows and never turn on the TV and Radio.
Personally I don’t care about it, but there is no way to escape it. It’s not on the level of the Fifa World Cup, where every product and street turns orange here, but it is damn close.
Also, since this year Australia gets to compete for some reason…

Australia *is* in it this year. It doesn’t make much sense, but apparently Eurovision has been huge in Australia for decades and since they have cultural ties to Europe… yeah… its a stretch, but they are definitely participating.

It amazes me that Eurovision manages to stay afloat, especially in this time of crisis where budgets are being cut and countries get bankrupt. Until about 5-10 years ago, sure, I’d sit down, start looking and turn it off after about an hour with a throbbing headache. Now, I never hear someone say they watched it and often it even passes without many people knowing about it. Sure, now I know it’s coming because of the Australia thing, so it might actually even be a thing to promote the whole ordeal a bit.
The show is excruciatingly slow, painfully boring and there’s generally no good artists/songs, although there are some exceptions. It’s pretty much accepted to be a horrible way to try and start a new or boost a forgotten singing career. There’s a reason why songs can be indicated to be “a typical Eurovision song”, or as one that may have a good chance at scoring high; that’s because those songs are nostalgically bad. I think once the economy in Eastern Europe, where it seems to be the most popular, picks up pace no one will still be watching it. And true, you can’t vote for your own country, but many countries are known to vote for their neighbors etc.

It’s hard to sum up how the continent feels about it, the UK have always kinda trod the line between enjoying it’s campness and openly mocking it, even the BBC have always poked fun at it during the broadcast. I guess you can do that as a nation when you have given the world The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Radiohead.

Eurovision is having it’s 60th anniversary this year, kinda depends on your definition of “new”, but yeah, it’s not. Australia are in it as a guest nation this year – I wonder how many Austria/Australia comments/jokes will be made 😉

eurovision is a strange beast. it’s campy as fuck, but only/also partially aware of it. so you might as well get one contestant who goes all the old-fashioned, sincere, epic, heavy-feelings ballad way, while the next one practically trolls the entire thing. it’s also one of the things no-one sees but everyone is weirdly informed about what happened. 😉
what’s really interesting about it is that you occasionally get glimpses into other cultures’ specific aesthetic, for better or worse. 😉 personally, i feel this was more pronounced just a few years back before they dropped the requirement that each contestant had to sing in the language of their country. listening to the way different languages sound, and how the sounds of different languages lend themselves well to different kinds of things was something i really enjoyed about it. now, most acts sing in english. but it’s still fairly low on the run-of-the-mill americanised pop sound, so that’s a plus.
and then there’s the spectacle of watching each country’s poll results trickle in and change rankings. that’s because each country runs its own voting thing (you can’t vote for your own country) and awards the top ten acts points from 1–8 for places 10–3, then 10 points for 2nd place and 12 for 1st place. the show hosts video-call representatives of each country to deliver their vote results, so the whole affair takes up quite a bit of time.
overall, it’s a regularly occurring pop music spectacle, so kinda similar to americans getting hung up on the superbowl halftime shows. except the aspect of being more openly campy and being more aware of it, which, i find, makes for a more compelling pop music space.
