  1. I’ve already seen a lot of people (apple apologists) saying, “well, non-power users don’t need a lot of storage, so 16gb is fine.” That’s total bullshit. My mom isn’t at all technical and she used up 32GB on her 5s super damn fast because she likes taking pictures with it and doesn’t carry a camera. So now, she signed up with iCloud at a high cost, which she has a hard time figuring out; and that runs out of storage fast now too. The base size should be 64 GB, with 128 and 256 options.

If anything, it’s the “power” users that can deal with 16GB because we know how to use google photos, dropbox, etc. But dealing with something is a terrible consumer choice.

  2. Damnit if Will hasn’t been killing it the last couple episodes. Had a couple close calls with milk out the nose moments from some of the gems coming out of his mouth. Gonna be sorely missed on the podcast. Hopefully he can find some time to do what Jeremy does and commute in just for the show. So entertainingly colorful on this one. *sigh*

  3. RE: The Snowden Interview. It’s “Part 1” because there will probably be a second part on Sunday. That there are three segments in the interview is just a function of them having commercial breaks.

There are numerous two part episodes in the archives, including the Mythbusters one.

  4. The reason Chinese developers downloaded that hacked copy of Xcode is because the Great Firewall of China makes the official Apple one super slow. The tinfoil hat reading of this might be the Chinese government doing that intentionally so that this sort of hack could be accomplished. Fortunately, iOS’ sandboxed nature prevented them from doing much outside of their own container, but it would still be really valuable if someone were able to vacuum up all the data in a user’s WeChat history, for instance.

  5. Okay – I have to confess, I am going to miss Will’s voice. He’s got a great voice for podcasts/radio. I’ll miss the chemistry between him and Norm and Jeremy and especially Gary. I will miss his sense of humor, crude as it is at times. I don’t post often, and when I have I’ve usually been giving Will grief (and this is only because I likely disagree with him on almost every single thing, him being a scalawag of a Southerner). All of that aside, as one human to another, I wish you fair winds and following seas. May God bless you and your family, and may your daughter be given every grace now and always.

  6. Are you going to change up the music slash transition sounds now that Will is on the way out? I notice that he is in a lot of sound bites.

  7. Apple doesn’t want you to look at your lock screen for the quick time or notification check anymore, you need to buy a watch for that!

  8. Are you going to change up the music slash transition sounds now that Will is on the way out? I notice that he is in a lot of sound bites.

hope not, not abruptly any way, obviously over time there would be less will quotes to include though.

@ video isn’t listed on youtube yet, just in case you didn’t lnow.

  9. Gary still shows up in the soundbytes, even though he is a very sporadic guest, so I have a feeling we’ll be hearing a lot of good Will-material for years to come.

  10. Greetings From a Scot living in Frankfurt….

Feel need to write guys.. I got my 32Gig I phone stolen 2 weeks ago. Locked it etc all ok, will get new iPhone with insurance so happy days… I got lender phone, a 16GIG !!!! I was like you guys , this would not work.. but guys I have to say.. Its actually grand… You have to admit as Tech journalists it be hard for you to comprehend how a 16 gig phone would be worthwhile.. I was of the same disposition…. But for the time I’ve had it its grand.. One thing I did realise was the amount of Apps I have accumulated that I did not need on the phone…( but can download anytime) But feel the rage for 16gig storage you have is a bit overblown… If I was getting Im going out to get Drunk phone ( german bier is as good as it says) .. Id easily get an 16gig iPhone 5 just for various drunken XYZ reasons.. But all in all I honestly think for non Power users a 16 gig iPhone is very manageable.. & it has not limited me to listening to my favourite podcasts including the 500Mb + DTSN ones.. All the best , Ever in Frankfurt beers on me.. And Will all the best on your new adventure…. Prost !!!

  11. To be fair Will… trump _thinks_ at the level of a second grader. So the veiled suggestion that you made that Norm was accusing trump of talking down to his supporters is probably not the case, He’s just not that nuanced a guy (trump that is, clearly not Norm!)

  12. Not really sure what ‘squirting on the Zune’ means, but just on a phonetic level it’s one of the most entertaining phrases I’ve heard all week. Plus, and as a bonus, it acts as an excellent substitute for the title line in ‘Puttin’ on the Ritz’.

  13. Thanks – as I suspected, the reality was far less interesting than one’s imagination would lead one to believe…

  14. Ah, here it is! I usually see This is Only a Test pop up in my YouTube subscription feed, but this one isn’t there for some reason, or listed on the Tested YouTube channel. No bother, just means I get to listen today!

  15. Hello guys, I am a Chinese student. I have a question about how to make little mechanical stuffs by hands at home. Would should I learn before I start to work. I major in Economics with minimum basic knowledge in Math and Physics. So, Any handbooks or guides to recommend? BTW, I want to make a watch which is like a mechanical counters. I am just really attracted by the machinery which has a beauty of rules.~ THX.~!!!!!!!

  16. Regarding powerful mobile graphics solutions,

Have you looked into Alienware Graphics Amplifiers? It’s a proprietary peripheral (a 16.1 x 7.3 x 6.8 box with a pci-express slot and psu) that wires up to their laptops, allowing you to run a desktop card with relatively minimal additional bulk. I imagine the entire station would fit in a carry-on.

I’m a game dev that recently went from an established/fixed location studio to a tiny Unity startup – we bought these as powerful mobile workstations because we tend to move around. Barring a few hiccups (mostly Windows 10 related) these have worked really well for us, I’m even considering ousting my personal full-tower workstation for one of these setups. Since we’re not in the VR space latency is not something I’ve tracked, but it’s promising that none of the guys using Cintiqs have had any complaints. If you haven’t heard of them it might be something to look into. Either way, congrats on the new venture!

  17. Am I the only one who continues to be bothered by the fact that they call it “The virtual minute” but the intro for it is Norm saying “Virtual update… this week”? I know they did it off-the-cuff during an episode but I need a better intro for the VR minute in my life. Please!

Also I love crazy Will, the ads are especially hilarious. You will be missed sir! 🙁

  18. I LOVED the ST:TNG Interactive Technical Manual on my Mac LC and you guys can’t take that away from me. It was awesome and will remain awesome forever in my memory.

  19. 16 gig is no big deal. I never have issues with the space on mine. I just don’t take pictures with it. Not everyone is a photog.

  20. He says “Virtual Reality…This week”

Well there you go, the intro is so bad that I can’t even hear it correctly! Waiting for version 2.0.
