  1. The intro worked so well this week – I suspect Norm has been practising. But then his sound-effect injector died. So much sadness…

Great show with lots of interesting stuff, as usual. Especially the section about experimental child rearing. I’m looking forward seeing the results in 10 or 12 years.

  2. For what it’s worth, I’ve tried typing dvorak and stuck with it for several months when writing prose. At the time I was in university, and did more long stints typing.

It’s not so much faster as more comfortable. You can definitely get used to it, and then feel disadvantaged every time you switch back to qwerty.

As a hobby programmer and someone that uses a lot of shortcuts, that has used and installed/reinstalled Windows and different variants of linux a few times… eventually you get tired of switching between things and just stick with something fairly stock that works…. which is qwerty. Programming environments and shortcuts in various apps make a lot of assumptions about what kind of keyboard you’re using (think also vi editor shortcuts “jkl;”, games “wasd” etc.).

I tried left and right hand dvorak too, briefly. I found it’s not as big a deal as you might think… you still have to move your hand back and forth across the keyboard. I found that I’m about as comfortable typing with one hand while I drink coffee or use the phone etc. I can do it reasonably fast, but it’s like using one hand to eat with a fork compared to using a knife and fork to eat. Pretty often you can use one hand, but you’ve got two so why not use both. You’ll never be as fast with one hand as with two unless your life depends on it (or become somewhat physically disabled with the other hand).

  3. If any of you guys have any old ipads you don’t want because they are “too slow” I would be more then happy to take it off your hands. I have never been able to afford a tablet yet alone an ipad, so if you guys have one just laying around I would be super happy to help you out. Being a maker I’m sure if would help me out in the long run.

  4. I just don’t get the VR gaming thing. Say Call of Duty, I would think the VR headset would be the equivalent of sitting closer to the screen and replacing a joystick with your head, which would free a thumb up to do other things.

Does VR gaming really need so much presence or would it defeat the purpose by not having it? Or Is modern VR really so powerful that totally immersion just happens?

I just see it as a way to rise above the limitations of modern controllers but I think I’m missing something. Maybe I’m narrow minded or maybe I’m just need to throw a virtual torch at someone? Can someone explain it to me or point me towards a good video on it?

  5. This episode plays out so slow. Will was pretty good at keeping control of the podcast and keeping the excitement there. Norm, Jeremy, and Patrick all offer something, but none of them are really have enough energy to keep the podcast going for over an hour.

Im not even a huge fan of Will or trying to get him back, but there needs to be a more energetic co-host.

Also hoping Gary returns at some point for an episode or two and we get a 4 seat with Will, Norm, Gary and Jeremy.

  6. FO4 would be great as a coop game… perhaps they’ll get it into FO5. However, it’d be awkward translated as an MMO, as demonstrated by TESO.

And 50 hours? Not even close. With all the side quests I spent over 200 hours in Oblivion in college. FO4’s map is more than twice the square mileage and there’s a lot of dense rural areas full of activity. It’s definitely going to give you your money’s worth. That said, it certainly requires careful balancing with my marriage. 😀

  7. Has the schedule changed for the new episodes? Used to be ready every Thursday morning.

edit. Oh I see. It’s no youtube, there’s just no post.
