Actually even having the rocket go blooooie its still very much cheaper with SpaceX. The per launch price of theirs vs like the ULA alternatives – the Atlas and the Delta is 1/4 the costs or less. So basically SpaceX can crash and burn 4-5 rockets getting the procedure down and they still are cheaper that one the old way. That and given that the result at other end – The Satellite lift is the same. All the costs learning to do this are a drop in the bucket vs tradition methods and sources.

(Ely) Broad/MIT/Harvard company Editas is working on the IPO and has already gathered 120 million in venture money. If they loose all patents to Berkeley it will create quite a shit storm. Thus even imminent scientists loose their cool. Jennifer Doudna’s application was held up 3 times by an anonymous 3rd party. Guess who that was. Broad was named junior party in the interference so it is on them to prove they invented first. If Berkeley had filed one day later it would the ‘first to file’ and it would be theirs. Only reason to do that is that they didn’t know who is in pipeline with similar inventions. So they must be very confident that they invented first.
Crispr/Cas9 and derivatives are used intensively in cell lines and mice engineered to facilitate targeting. As we are all knockouts for about 30-70 different genes and house tremendous genetic variability that effects gene function an regulation using targeting strategies in the ensuing complex compensatory signaling context is some time away. Sorry Norm, expanding intellectual capacity, decreasing sleep requirements, enhancing fitness level and stress tolerance is not on the primary list. Diseases with well established genetic causality, cancer mutations and disabling of retroviruses like HIV are the first application.
I love hearing the science stuff from Kishore…. the podcast he does with Indre Viskontas is amazing.
Shit storm has already started with this Heroes of CRISPR BS. I think we’ll see another volley in March ahead of the patent interference ruling.
I did not mention targeting as it gets pretty technical for a broad audience, but is that something I should do next time?
And I totally agree with the first applications you mentioned, except I do think agriculture is going to have the easiest road for implementation (assuming they don’t hit a big scientific hurdle).
Many of the folks involved keep turning down any requests for detailed interviews. I’ll have some folks on my science podcast in the coming weeks to discuss in more detail though. Even though he is biased, I hope to get Michael Eisen on first as he has been extremely outspoken on the issue.
