Episode 355 – WWDC and E3 2016 – 6/16/16

Slow news week, right? Norm makes it back from a whirlwind week of travel to chat with Jeremy and Will about all the announcements from Apple’s WWDC conference and E3. From Apple watch upgrades to Microsoft and Sony’s next-gen console plans, there’s almost too much to discuss. Plus, VR demo impressions!

  1. Just to let you know there is a bit of echo. will need to figure out the best setup to reduce it as much as possible

  2. Will no longer works for a tech blog so we should cut him some slack, but Microsoft snagged LinkedIn for $26.2 big billion bucks, not $36.

  3. Its awesome you are coming down under, remember to watch out for drop bears. Are you planning on checking out the supernova pop culture expo? I doubt you will be Australia for the Sydney one, being this Friday to Sunday, but they are in Brisbane the weekend after.

I wonder if it is a coincidence Atlassian has been sponsoring the podcasts lately and one of their main offices is in Sydney (it used to be their HQ).

  4. Will! I always enjoy his looks toward the bigger picture and overall trends over getting bogged down in the details.

  5. I have been to E3 for the past couple years and this is the smallest showing I’ve have seen in terms of available things to do on the show floor. Since there were not that many booths there were massive lines that were unbearable for those without press badges. Nintendo of all companies have created a literal walled garden of Hyrule at their booth.

  6. one thing I have noticed on reddit is that people are impatient to the extreme. I have seen individual posts go through a asking a question to unbridled hate. Where obviously there was no time to respond.

couple that with silence from oculus along with a deep unbridled hate of facebook from a lot a redditers and you get a lot of the toxic feel and dog-piling you mentioned.

  7. Hey Tested. There are some simple fixes for the reverb that you hear. Look at your area carefully. Think of the sound sources as being light sources, and think of flat, hard surfaces as mirrors. Best solution as you build the set is to install some acoustic panels. There are some nice panels that would be visually attractive on the set.. Another important and cheap solution to consider is to lay down some rugs. Hanging curtains at the off-camera walls also helps. The idea is to get rid of the right angles and flat non-textured surfaces. Another option is acoustic shields for the microphones.

  8. Glad to see your coming down to Oz.

If you want a terrible tour of Canberra sights, and a good tour of some nice drinking spots let me know!

  9. If you end up in Adelaide, contact me, i”ll buy you a beer and take you out for lunch. Happy to podcast with you in my office as well if you need a space 😉

  10. Fascinating that in the internet, people who grew up in alphabetic written cultures (roman letters) are beginning to use logographic written language (emoji) but people who grew up with logographic language (Chinese) often enter the logographs using alphabetic shortcuts (pinyin input method).

But in a sense aren’t emjoi akin to ancient hieroglyphics or the very first Chinese writing, literal pictures of an object meant to convey meaning. But did the ancients not have the smiley?

  11. Thanks for summarizing up the WWDC. The whole WWDC was so boring I thankfully fell asleep. Apple is so self absorbed with micro detailing touch devices that it seems that no further real development can be expected in a long time. Little swipes here and there. Raw photos face recognition on a 16GB iPhone? iCloud filler. Who cares? And I am using Macs since 1989.
