Podcast - This Is Only a Test
Episode 361 – Fiducial Markers Everywhere – 8/4/16
The full team is back this week to talk about disappointments in recent comic book adaptations, a massive pinball convention, the new Galaxy Note 7, and our appreciation of the Netflix show Stranger Things. Plus, an idea of how to make use of 8K cameras. (Apologies for the audio in this episode–our sound recorder shut down mid-recording and we’re using a backup feed.)

When I first discovered tested a watched more than 1 TIOAT per day until i got caught up!
the reviews were a bit pointless – who cares about a 3 year old phone… but generally the casts, especially those with Gary, are brilliant.
I also binged all the old episodes which basically equated to several per day for months. It was fascinating to learn about all the technological developments of the past few years in fast forward. I only got a smartphone recently so it was basically all new to me.
It’s fascinating to see some of the patterns… for example they used to make fun of the smartphone makers for creating bigger and bigger phones over time… but now a big phone is considered normal.
The audio on this recording is very soft and not as clear as usual. Has anybody else noticed this?
Yes, it almost sounds like it’s really low bitrate. I listen to the audio via Pocket Casts on my commute. I had to crank the volume in my car to make out some dialogue, which makes it sound even worse (to the point where I stopped listening to check for a better copy). I checked the file once I got to work, it’s a proper 128 Kbps MP3, so the problem shouldn’t be with the encoding.
Audio quality is usually awesome, did something change with this weeks podcast?
There is a clue in the episode description: Apologies for the audio in this episode–our sound recorder shut down mid-recording and we’re using a backup feed.
)
Ah! Apologies!
This is the internet though. It’s my right to rant at the slightest inconvenience without reading anything thoroughly. Dagnabbit!

i binge watched them also and have noticed the the sound quality and content have drop drasticly since will left. norm needs to learn how to run the equipment better and needs to work harder at finding better content

Sorry again for the audio problems this week! The normal recorder quit about an hour into the episode so we had to use the camera audio.
Here’s the info on Seymour Papert’s passing, his work on constructionism, leading to the development of Lego Mindstorms. http://news.mit.edu/2016/seymour-papert-pioneer-of-constructionist-learning-dies-0801
As addition to the VR minute. It is absolutely stunning how much better the visuals are with GTX1080 compared to an GTX980 in the Oculus Rift. Just got the GTX1080 in, not overclocked yet as I am still waiting for the EK waterblock but still much nicer, less fuzzier and clearer pictures – much less motion sickness. Not even played around with pixel over ride in the Oculus Debug tool. Just brillian t- except that I got only two years out of my GTX980 which I bought the day they were first available.
That is of course your inalienable right as a Citizen of the Internets :p
Ugh – sounds like its worth shelling out for the 1080. Dang it.
Regarding their comments about Suicide Squad, I will add that there is a movie that presents backstories for several unknown characters that later come together convincingly to fight a greater evil, that did very well in the box office and is highly popular among fans, and that movie is: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY.
So it can be done, but DC/UNIVERSAL just did it poorly.
the Lumia 950 has an iris scanner to unlock the phone. Not a retinal scanner, but is quite handy.
Lol, I missed that! I usually skip the intro text as I’m eager to listen to the podcast. Thanks!
+1 for Superman: Peace on Earth, and the whole 6-part series of oversized format stories that Paul Dini and Alex Ross collaborated on. They are utterly gorgeous and Peace on Earth is particularly poignant.
If you can get your hands on the individual oversized versions all the better, but otherwise, grab the whole collection: https://www.amazon.com/Worlds-Greatest-Super-Heroes-Paul-Dini/dp/1401202543/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=
Stranger things is E.T and Stand by Me…. You can see it just in the trailer
Yes painful. And the GTX1080 is running on PCIe 8 lanes, not 16 as I still have the GTX 980 in the PC also so that I can swap forward and back. Oculus recognizes automatically which card is used for Rift output. Virtual desktop doesn’t work across the cards. Only shows the desktop on the Card with the Rift attached.
Audio = brutal
Try watching the DC Animated movie Assault on Arkham. Same basic story as Suicide Squad but much better execution.

I just came home from a vacation trip to Krakow, Poland. Stumbled across a pinball museum with 50 tables ranging from old classics to modern games. 10€ for a whole day of free to play. Before visiting I ate a burger with poutine at a Canada-themed burger shack. A real treat!
yes you are totally right. Norm was very quiet and Kishore was super loud. Also crackling in the background throughout. Still enjoyed the show but it was quite annoying. In particular when the were talking about shooting in Vegas and they all laughed at one point. Kishore almost blew my car speakers as I had the volume up loud to be able to hear Norm.
I’ve described “Stranger Things” to my friends as “Goonies meets X-Files”
Will do! I still believe that one of the best batman movies is: Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993).
If you haven’t watched it I highly recommend it 😀
I’ve been telling people it’s The Goonies+Stand By Me+ET+X-Files
What a coincidence, I’m binge listening to the old TIOATs and I just got through CES2012 when they talked about Sharp’s 8k TV.
Gary: “What did it look like?”
Will: “I had a Nerd boner immediately”
Classic.
Shout out to my buddy Matt Sarnoff who was also in the pinball competition! Maybe you know him.
For something more low-tech, try skeet or trap shooting. Honestly shooting guns is fairly boring to me, but I do enjoy the react-and-shoot aspect of shooting a bright orange clay disk flying across the sky. There’s a gun range in Cupertino where you bring your own clays and they have these catapults you load up and launch from. Also, south San Jose has a skeet shooting range.
Tron-esque? C’mon! Adam nailed it — go listen to some Tangerine Dream you … kids. 🙂
