Podcast - This Is Only a Test

Episode 372 – Apple Can’t Do That – 10/20/16

Norm, Jeremy, and Kishore plan an after-work hangout to read Guardians of the Galaxy comic books, but first, record a podcast about the latest Apple Mac event rumors, Tesla’s Model 3 production schedule, Google Pixel reviews, and new Pinball machines. Plus, Norm continues to try to convince the guys to watch Westworld!

  1. I don’t want to touch my laptop display with my oily fingers! That’s what keyboard and trackpads are for!

  2. Deep down inside I might have been reaching from Son of Man but really the shape of the “skull” or the creepy grin makes me want it to have a hat. It’s evil, creepy and looks deep down into your soul. What better hat then a Bowler Hat to embrace that?

  3. I have a touch laptop and wouldn’t buy a non-touchpad anymore. It drives me nuts when I have to use a non-touch laptop anymore.

  4. First, let me say, again, thank you for not turning this podcast into a political quagmire. There are enough places to go right now to get bogged down in politics if that’s what one wants to do. That being said, the discussion on polls and statistics was interesting. I had two questions (which I know will likely go unanswered because y’all are incredibly busy right now – perfectly understandable).

First – are there any thoughts with how badly Nick Silver screwed up his predictions on Trump during the Republican Primary? I know he’s come out and admitted as much, but I wasn’t sure I understood what corrective actions he’s taken to calibrate the model now that Trump is one of the two main candidates.

Second – is there any discussion on any of the information coming out from Wikileaks with regard to how Podesta claims to have skewed polls through over-sampling? It seems like that’s tantamount to the Casino confessing it’s rigged the deck at the Blackjack table. Does that throw any of the predictive models askew? I read that one of the emails specifically cited an ABC poll as having skewed the sample base to 36-27-31 (Dems-Repubs-Independents). It made me really wonder how much of the baseline data is made available for all the various polls (i.e., of the folks polled, are the various pertinent demographics listed with the poll? How do you find this info out? Is it factored into the forecasting models?)

  5. Also, just for the record, I’m disappointed in Norm and Kishore for not IMMEDIATELY recognizing the sound of the mouse droid. That’s a negative 10 on the Nerd Cred Card. I know y’all are busy and stressed with the live show coming up, but that kind of flub is a serious faux pas.

  6. There has been live action role playing games, or LARPS, for a long time. The oldest one that I know is the Society for Creative Anachronism, the Medieval Re-creationist. One of the most popular was Vampire:The Masquerade. Westworld is, in many ways, just the next level of these LARPS, with AIs playing the NPCs, or Non-Player Characters…

  7. 22:07 Norm says “hookers”. You can almost hear Kishore’s head snap towards Norm all like.. “did you just say HOOKERS”? hilarious.

sorry to necro this old thread. just catching up on some missed ‘casts. 🙂
