Podcast - This Is Only a Test

Episode 20 – This is a Zed-Free Zone – 7/22/2010

Norm’s on the road at Comic-Con, “working hard” and taking lots of pictures of scantily clad cosplayers down at Comic-Con, while Will is holding down the home office. In his stead, Tested.com’s Matt Braga is signing in, and he and Will talk about Alien Swarm, the Tested TF2 server, the current crop of Android phones, the problem wtih the iPhone 4, and then take a whole lot of reader questions.

  1. TheBeast just replied to your comment:

     Could you do some stress testing on it perhaps? Not too see whether functionality remains, but to see how well it can take environmental damage;

    • How badly does it scratch when left in a bag with car keys?
    • Does too much sliding across various surfaces cause the back to scratch up?
    • What does it take to crack that screen?

  2. This is in the queue after the inception soundtrack is finished.
For a second I thought that was Norm in the Baroness costume.

  3. It didn’t occur to me that they might charge for Alien Swarm content. That’s probably because it isn’t theirway and all the tools are openly available. I dunno, it could happen. I wouldn’t be interested. I just played long enough to get the TF2 hat and then 2 or 3 rounds longer because I didn’t want to leave the 3 others.

OH, also, Firefly takes place in a single star system far away from Earth. Shorter distances.

I’d recommend a nice Zune HD, they’re nice. Only problem is that odds are bad on future support and whatnot.

I’m sure Valve would love it if they could release it for free on the arcade. Alien Swarm already has support for the 360 pad. I’d imagine it controls better with a pad since you’d get analog movement as well. The big thing you’d miss out on is sketching on the map, but I only ever see obscene words drawn on the map anyway.

  5.  Oh man, 360 controller support is in there? That might be enough of a motivator to dig out my 360 Controller adapter thing. While I feel mouse and keyboard is great for shooters, I don’t feel nearly accurate or fast enough playing Alien Swarm, though a lot of that may be my kinda terrible framerate.

It’s not the most well documented feature but yeah. Just gotta open up the console and type in ‘exec 360controller_pc’. It doesn’t go so far as to change the context sensitive icons and I believe you still the need the mouse to navigate the loadout options, but the controls feel right at home.

  7. As for speakers and headphones, I just have stereo headphones and Logitech 5.1 speakers.  I ran an extension cable for the mic from the back of my pc to the bottom of my center channel speaker.  I just plug in the audio at the center channel speaker and the mic into the extension.  It has worked great for me over the last few years and streamlines the ease of using headphones and speakers!

  8. Haha…

I downloaded the .mp3, and it flips over to some sort of groovy devil music around minute 30. Tested taken over by dark spawn? Ahhhhhh!

  9. Never mind. Some sort of bizarre audio crosstalk going on with my phone. I copied it to a different device, and it’s fine.

  10. 133F is only around 56C. Not very hot for a laptop. In a cool room and not doing very much work, my MBP hovers around 40C. Under load, it ranges anywhere from 60C to 90C.

Personally, I don’t think the MBP’s thermal design is very good, but the numbers above are (unfortunately) normal.

  11. Finally listening to the podcast (ahhh Monday). I’ve never used a case on any phone and never had any problems.

    *EDIT*
Please don’t remind us what we can’t have. All Canadians know this already and it’s just a bitter reminder.

    *EDIT #2*
Vancouver has many many Tim Hortons. I can’t speak for Alberta but BC is sick with them.

  12.   Have you had time to test the Tritton headphones yet? I’ve owned the AX Pros for over a year and, while I use it for my xbox 360 via optical cable through the mixer, I’ve found that they work very well for a full 3D sound. Playing Modern Warfare 2 I can distinguish not only NSEW position, but also whether or not they are above/below me. It adds an indispensable level of awareness to my game.

  13. I know this is an ancient post so no one will actually read this, but as a browncoat I feel obligated to comments that Firefly takes place in a single solar system with tons of planets and moons. See the intro to Serenity.
