The boxing term “great white hope” is absolutely racist, it referred not to a hope that was white, but a hope for white supremacy. I am not saying using it in ignorance is either indicative of racism or is hard to understand, but yeah. It’s origin is absolutely racist.
This is not a pipe is a reference to Rene Magritte. In his painting “The Treachery of Images” he depicts a painting of a pipe, and below, it says ” Ceci n’est pas une pipe.” Norm is correct in that it is philosophical. Magritte’s point was was that it is not, in fact, a pipe… it is merely an image of a pipe.

To Gary, as one movie fan to another, you should never be ashamed of what you watch. The garbage is as informative as the good stuff, most times. Hiding it is for the insecure.

Guys, I love the podcast, but I thought you had a broader-mind approach to the discussion of video games. Talk about a game’s flaws by all means, but to flat out say a game like GT5 is a disappointment across the board is just bizarre, especially considering the recent sales reports for this barely month-old game. 46 above-80 scores on Metacritic out of 55, and the other 9 between 60 and 79 does not equate to a failure by any stretch of the word.
Anyway, that’s the only gripe I had. Gary Whitta should be on every podcast, beard-talk was funny (I use a triple bladed Gillette M3 Power – Gillette told me it was the best a man can get. They wouldn’t lie), and the Google laptop thing seems weird – I think they give you that contract deal to make you feel happy about getting free stuff, knowing full well that if you need more data, you’ll be sweetened up enough to feel good about buying into a bigger plan for more moneys.
I fucking love this podcasts, by far the best out of all of whiskey, you guys are just so…. fun? sexy? awesome? or all of the above?
I think smartphones should weigh 20LBS, and tablets should weight 40LBS. Think of how strong we would get after a couple months of daily use. Fuck light weight phones.

I also did the beard thing last month but I looked too old so I shaved it off. I am now testing the Schick Hydro 5 and so far I get the best shave I have ever had. Hmmm maybe a Tested feature! How do I get the best shave?
Now I have to change my toilet seat!

I’m in the exact same boat (since I started getting the widow’s peak). I shave my head with a Mach 3 every two days, and all I use is the razor, shaving soap (with brush), and Head & Shoulders to keep the dandruff down.
The only time I don’t recommend shaving your head is if you have one of those lumpy potato head, but it’s a great cheap haircut!

Whaaa? No, I won’t. Unless Netflix works a deal with the big studios to sync streaming availability with disc release for a large percentage of the big films, there’s no way I’m giving up the physical disc plan.
The beard talk was fascinating. My boyfriend has had a beard since shortly after he and I got together last year, mostly cause I said I liked them. I find that men with round faces are very attractive with facial hair, provided they don’t let it get wildly out of control. I’ve threatened him on many occasion that if he were to shave it, I would opt for the Patrick Stewart look. I think he keeps it not because he likes it, but because he likes how lazy it allows him to be in that he never has to shave anymore, just keep it trim.
The great white hope. It’s not a Tested podcast if Gary isn’t offending someone. Two weeks in a row now with no listener questions. Still a bit jarring to end the show without them. Oh, well. Que sera sera. Whatever will be, will be. The future’s not ours to see.
Man, i thought the PS3 bashing was over? Isn’t PS3 only 4 million behind 360 now? Still selling in Europe and Japan, maybe USA sales are slacking but that doesn’t mean it is failing and they are going bankrupt and abandon Playstation, have some perspective, USA isn’t the be all end all.
I literally only have a beard because of the same reason Will does: shaving your upper lip sucks.
Also, from now on I think they should have a “Sony Bashing” segment, music intro and all, so that I know to skip ahead or stop listening. Every time Sony comes up people start spouting nonsense. Actually, I don’t care who they are bashing, I don’t want to hear insanity unsupported by facts and highly negative opinions dressed up as facts.
Asian corporations never go bankrupt. They are so embedded in their culture by making so many different products, they’re too big to fail. Hyundai is the world’s largest ship builder. Mitsubishi makes escalators. LG makes the batteries that power the Chevy Volt. They have their tentacles in everything, an analogy I’m sure they embrace.
As someone who works in a call centre here are some tips for getting through the process as harmlessly as possible.
1) Before you call have a list of all your personal details, be it phone number, address and things like that too as you never know when you’ll need them. It’s often easier having it written in a list in front of you rather than off the top of your head.
2) Adding to that, have any information regarding your problem at hand. Be it order ID, username, product name, product ID and everything else related to the product/service. This will help speed up the call immensely.
3) Be very very clear on what the problem actually is, don’t leave anything at all vague, go into as much detail as possible about it even things which you might not think are relevant. It also helps if you write this down beforehand too so you know what to say.
4) Be prepared to try whatever solutions the person suggests, if it’s relating to a specific product have that product setup and ready to use this again saves time.
5) If the person in customer support is good at their job they will be very responsive to your answers, they will very quickly pick up that you are knowledgeable about it and will try and get through all the required questions as quickly as possible, in most cases there are a lot of things we have to say and if we don’t say them then we get in trouble. It sucks and is incredibly stupid when common sense comes into play but it’s going to have to happen, the person asking you questions doesn’t want to do it either.
If you stick to those things, just try and be clear about everything you say and the call will not only go through quicker and be better for both you and the person on the other end, if everyone did this it’ll also speed up waiting times for everyone. It’s just a shame that really from my experience there’s very few “skilled” call handlers and a lot of people phoning up with the problem are often very unclear.
Although I personally get very annoyed when calling customer support (such as when my Xbox was scratching discs and Microsoft told me that they could not confirm that it was the xbox scratching the discs unless I got the xbox to scratch more game discs which they would NOT replace.)
Props for using the DE Will
You can charge PS3 controllers by plugging them to other devices I believe. Not sure about PC, but it sure works on my Mac. I wonder if that means you can get an USB HUB for PS3 related devices.
As far as November results, I think it was pretty obvious to everyone that Kinect was going to win this round for Microsoft. Based on how Sony handled move, it seems that they knew too. They moved everything for next year in what could be seen as a retreat and regroup strategy. ( In my opinion at least, I just wanted to mention the USB thing) .
Also I don’t believe GT5 was projected to be a system seller in the US since there’s no GT5 bundle for the US, but there was one for Japan and Europe… Probably the right move. I think they understand what everyone else does, Fortza became a problem and they took too long to release it.
Gary has 4 XBoxes and I have none. No fair!
