  1. Matt sounds weird. Does he have a cold?

    No, he’s just Canadian.

That’s racist! By weird I mean different than usual. And as a Canadian myself I am offended by your joke!

Just call me a fat Yank and get over it ; )

That would make me feel even worse.

  4. Hey Will. I’m Daniel and I had “called in” about Windows 8. I was pretty happy with everyone’s response.

You guys are right in that Windows running on ARM is unproven in the real world.

That being said, I’m optimistic that ARMdows/W.ARM/W.ARMdows will at the very least have the smoothness of iPad when only running 2-4 things. While it does say “Windows”, people who know what ARM is can’t reasonably expect it to be able to run a browser with five tabs, a couple Office docs, and a HD video. There’s no point in trying to do that many things at once on a tablet anyway, no? The average consumer doesn’t do that many things at once anyway, so it doesn’t seem like something to worry about to me.

Also, Norm said that Microsoft should make a separate tablet OS. But why? In 3-5 years (and beyond) it won’t matter. SOC manufacturers are making their way up in terms of power, while Intel and AMD are going down with portability and power consumption. In a similar fashion, mobile OS developers are moving up in terms of complexity and devices (iOS and Android going to tablets, HP adding webOS to their computers) and Microsoft is the only company with the top down approach for Windows. Eventually everything will meet in the middle, what ever that middle may look like in the future.

Two-three versions of Windows down the line, I wouldn’t be surprised if Microsoft has the same base x86 or ARM Windows kernal running on everything. The desktop OS will of course be the most complicated, and maybe they’ll knick a few things off for phones and tablets. Why not consolidate and hedge your bets now for when we eventually do get there? You can already see they’re heading that way by having a extremely similar UI across their OSes (Windows, Windows Phone, and Xbox). Of course I don’t know anything about the technical complexities of doing that, so take this last paragraph with a mouth full of salt.

My rampant speculation aside, Windows 8 rather then a completely new OS for tablets makes sense to me.

  5. i totally disagree with wills physical keyboard hate, it is not like they use the space they safe for bigger batterys or anything.

todays highend smartphones have the same  battery capacity as a 7 year old htc blueangel :/. how hard can it be to make the phones slightly thicker and use a 2000mah+ lipo battery.

  6. Awesome show this week guys. I hope someday Matt can move to SF and be a permanent guest on the podcast.

It would also be so fucking awesome if Will and Norm were on the Amazing Race.

    Also, this:

This Is Only a Test is now my favorite Whiskey Media podcast.

  7. The bathrooms on the transcanada are awesome clean between Montreal and Toronto anyways.

  8. I do, but I’m just about over it. Tried my best not to sniffle and breath into the mic.

That’s more or less what I was thinking of. Especially around Toronto, all the 400-series highways have pretty decent restrooms in all the newer facilities built over the past few years.

  9. tell me about it last year we got 2 bathrooms the rest were all under renovation. At least this summer they were all done.

Also you put up with a lot when they diss Canada.

  10. It would be awesome if you guys made it into amazing race. Haven’t watched in awhile but I’d definitely watch that.

Also, I could say that I was on Tested before it was mainstream.

  11. Will, I have tweeted this to you, go for a comcast business line. I am an IT professional who needs to have my VPN connection running 10-15 hours a day which means, I need a fast and reliable connection. The only real provider I had was comcast, but the line I shared with the downstairs apartment was shit. Would could out all the time, slow unreliable speeds, ect.

I called comcast got a business line setup. I had them come in, and install a whole new line just for me from the pole. They gave me there generic business line modem, which is actually a bit nicer than there residential hardware. You are going to pay 100$ a month for internet, but because you do a lot of work from home, it pays for itself. When my internet connections goes down, I call the business class support line and it is back up within half an hour.

  12. You know what the icing on the cake would be if Will and Norm get into the Amazing Race? The awesome cluster fuck that would happen to the podcast in that month’s time.

I imagine it being just Ana and Gary, with Matt skyping in if he can (GAM? GAB? MAG? BAG?). Oh god, I can’t stop laughing when I think about it.

Also, POOR MANS TESTED CONTENT EVERYWHERE!!!

  13. Can’t wait to listen. Planning to go on a long walk later – it will be healthy and entertaining at the same time! This podcast has been so good recently.

  14. I’ve always been a fan of the “Hetero Life-mates” descriptor. I guess you’d have to work tech nerd in there somehow. Tech-mates?

  15. Oh wow, I never let anyone put on and/or lace my shoes in a shoe shop ever.. I always feel bad for them so I send them away (not because my feet smell btw.. they don’t! hehe). 🙂

  16. About the McDonalds WiFi: You don’t want completley authentication free wifi, since everything is plaintext. Even WPA with a known key is enough to encrypt the traffic and prevent trolls using tools like like FireSheep from fucking with your Facebook (Or Google+ :P)

  17. The early bit of this podcast is fairly relatable for me; I’m Canadian AND I have a surname with A (Arsenault) O.o

  18. good luck getting on The Amazing Race. That would be pretty awesome. I think featuring Norm’s competitiveness, in comparison to Will’s, might be a good angle. In any case, I think go for some comedy, as people always like that.

  19. You know what would be cool? Is if the Tested listeners could get in on all the early invites of stuff. …Google+, Turntable.. Its kinda frustrating hearing you guys have so much fun and us losers cant participate.

  20. Not quite my area, but I wouldn’t be to surprised, but then you would run into having to isolate the areas that you needed to tweak, so that would largely be a brute force method.
Having the compositor do it, as the final stage before rendering out frames to be sent to the DI for final color correction seems to be the method that I have run across in the studios that I’ve been at.

  21. Good to have Matt along, I’m tending to agree more with Gary than Will & Norm about trends. He represents the end user, you know someone who doesn’t really give a s@$t about most things, LOL.

  22. What happens to my WhiskeyMedia account when I die? =0

You get a little tombstone next to your avatar. And if you’re a paying member, Dave Snider will come to your funeral.

  23. I still think your Amazing Race two word description should be “Professional Nerds” or “Tech Dorks”.

  24. I still think your Amazing Race two word description should be “Professional Nerds” or “Tech Dorks”.

    I like Professional Nerds.

  25. I’ve never watched a single episode of The Amazing Race, but it will my new addiction if Will and Norm join.

  26. Great podcast guys! was awesome as always, I just wish that you’d let him speak more. After all I feel that us Europeans and Canadians should stick together since we are often left out when it comes to technology.

But not when talking Spotify! I’ve used the service for a year or more and I really like it. I don’t understand ‘s argument against Rdio about not owning the music. I embrace not owning it! No more music taking up space on my hard drives, no more managing music and syncing to phone, tablet, etc. It just works! App on phone, playlists synced across devices. I really don’t understand why Gary and others like Netflix so much but don’t like music streaming services. You can always buy the music you really like through Spotify or Rdio, although I never do that anymore – I don’t see the point since you can store playlists offline with Spotify.

  27. Hey Will, and the rest of the Tested crew. I am currently listening to ep. 73 and I just wanted to let you know that yes indeed the combo Taco Bell/KFC/Pizza Huts STILL EXIST. I live in Hampton VA and not only do we have many dual combo fast food places but I can think of three, THREE triple combo Taco Bell/KFC/Pizza Huts within reasonable driving distance from me. The Hampton Roads area, or the 7 major cities of southeastern Va for those unfamiliar with the area, is very shitty for food and food variety. We are only now starting to get a handful of good restaurants, and I will be surprised if many of them last too long. I love when you guys talk about food, but am jealous of the variety you guys have in SF.

  28. “The video you have requested is not available for your geographic region”. Come on, don’t forget that there are Tested fans outside the US!

  29. Tell me where to bombard Will & Norm must be on amazing race spambots! It must happen! Make that audition video the best it can be (Include bits with your Condom video and snipets of Norms competive nature) show them why you would be the most entertaining couple! And get Joey or Ana to fancy it up! Good luck have tested!

  30. the whole part about virtual machines and potential howto’s was pretty cool. I’ve wanted to something like this but been pretty intimidated
