Hey will, how come you guys don’t have new podcasts as posts on the main page? Even as one of those little in-between posts. You’d get more listeners, and the ‘new’ icon on the menubar goes away after like half a day so it’s hard to notice new podcasts sometimes.
It comes up on the rss feed. And I’ve subscribed to it in Zune so I never miss it. 🙂
I actually see iPads on BART more than occasionally. Daily, more like. Interestingly, I rarely saw them before the iPad 2 came out. I guess most people are wary enough to give Apple first-gen devices a pass.
I’m trying to guess how much Norm will talk about his new Air. Hmm, if Case and Will reel it in, maybe 30-40 minutes? They have to discuss the refresh and maybe get some playful banter in there.
Mechanical keyboards are the best. run from like 100-150 dollars, or 85 if you’re going for the cheapest I know (Razer Blackwidow, which apparently is shitty by comparison)
UC San Diego is the only choice for “the California experience.” America’s Finest City.
Whoa, whoa, whoa. Is Will Smith talkin’ game about UC Davis? Sure it’s an Ag school and Veterinary school(2nd best in the country. Fuck you Cornell, lol), but there is a lot more to Davis than just that.
I’m going to be transferring there in the fall as a Computer Science major (not some B.S. Cognitive Science major, lol. I kid Norm).
To answer the guy’s question. As a lifetime Californian, I’d say any of the UC’s are good.
UCLA is great but LA isn’t. This school is also great if you’re interested in seeing NCAA athletics. Both UCLA’s football and basketball teams are worth watching.
UC Berkley is a fantastic school, but it’s pretty competitive. I met a guy at Davis who’s transferring to Davis from Berkley because he said no one was friends up there. Everyone studied and competed for the bast grades. That sounds too intense for be, but on the flip side, you’re close to the Bay Area. Also Unix was invent and several elements were discovered at UC Berkley, so that’s awesome.
UC Santa Cruz is probably the most stereotypical California College. Beaches, hippies and a banana slug as a mascot.
UC Davis is located in a small, cyclist city. It’s kind of in the middle of everything. Bay Area’s 2 hours away and Lake Tahoe and Sierras aren’t far either.
You can’t really go wrong if you chose any of these schools

I agree with the podcast being a bit more visable. I don’t visit this site as often as Giantbomb and I forget the podcast from time to time, and that new sign does disappear super quickly which is a bit silly since its a week between podcasts.
Recently I was stuck in a hotel room with no laptop(terrifying I know) so I had to watch regular basic cable. It was a terrible experience. I’ve been using Netflix / Hulu even YouTube to watch videos for years now, and the thought of actually sitting down at a certain time to watch a show is ludacris to me.
Just like a smart phone is something I can’t live without(GPS), TV on demand, watching what i want when I want is also something I cannot live without.
P.S. I bought a Mechanical Keyboard (Razer Black WIdow) last weekend. It is amazing, membrane keyboards i use at work feel “mushy” and sloppy now.
My PC monitor is way more badass than my shitty TV set (Standard Def). Since my desk is right next to the TV I just watch Hulu and Netflix on the PC from the couch. Not everyone has giant fancy TVquest TVs. 🙁
You guys were wondering why so many people stream from the PC. For something you may not have considered, my wife and I do not have cable TV, but we do have a 50/10 business class internet connection. The main device that is plugged into the TV is an HTPC running windows 7. We’d technically be part of the percentage that streams from PC, but that streaming is occuring on our LCDTV in our family room. I’d imagine we’re not alone in this.
Loyd Case is a wise man and i enjoy his contributions to the site. And i’m not just saying that because he’s old (though that also helps).
Logitech should come out with a new flagship wireless mouse already. The Performance MX won’t do, and it’s probably a few years old at this point. Don’t know what the hell they’re doing down there in Switzerland.
as a college kid its actually not uncommon to watch tv a lot seeing that cable is a standard in dorms now. That and they already own tvs because they play xbox or ps3. Having 42 in or bigger isnt the most normal thing is the world but in 30″ range seems quite common and depending on the 2 people there might be 2 tvs.
Exactly. My girlfriend and I stream a ton of stuff through our HTPC that’s hooked up to our living room TV.
I go to Chico. Those Davis cats give our campus a bad name by coming over to our town and wrecking havoc because their town is too boring to actually party in. So Davis can go pound sand.
I’ve lived in Chico my whole life, and I’m transferring to Davis this fall. I have nothing against Chico State(many of my good friends go there), but I just want to see other places(and move out of the house).
I’m not a big party-goer either, so Chico State isn’t for me. I don’t know if I would blame people from out of town for Chico State’s reputation though. Sure Halloween and St. Patrick’s Day can be crazy, but people are constantly partying in Chico no matter what day it is.
Great to hear Loyd Case on the podcast, a worthy substitute for Gary. Would love to hear them both on together. Make it happen Will!

The reason there were no Volts in transformers, and why there’s not going to be all that much product placement of it is that they don’t want to sell electric cars. Low maintenence vehicles = less money over the long haul. Crap quality american cars make tons of money on spare parts. Electric cars are simpler.
Oh man, the UC Irvine talk (where I went to school). My friend lived in Gondolin, and the circle architecture of the campus layout is cool. Still, I’m glad Irvine was mentioned at least so props to Loyd for the shout out. But Norm, Irvine is where Blizzard is located! BLIZZARD!
Edit: Just remembered, U.C. Irvine might be an a-typical Cali experience since it has a majority of asians (something like 51%) and the entire city is pre-planned and owned by the Irvine company.

To asker 1: In skydrive, you get 25 gigs of storage. But that’s on the web, and seems like a hassle. However, you can use a trick to get the online path to the skydrive folder. Download a trial of Office 2010. Open OneNote, klick save to web, then logon to xbox live. And take the full path of the folder and map it up as a network drive in windows. Done. That’s 25 gigs on SkyDrive vs Dropboxs 2.
To asker 3: I use my Msi Wind u100 as a home server. I have access to windows server 2008 (not R2) and the wind works as a DC, DHCP server, DNS, fileserver and torrent box. It’s slow, but it does indeed do it’s job. I have 2 gigs of RAM in it. If you dont have any win licenses, you can use a Linux distro. And use the same services on it. Perfect for streaming to my WDTV Live and download legal torrents.
