Episode 80 – Not the Best Week to Record Early – 8/25/2011
On this week’s episode, we don’t talk about Steve Jobs resigning from Apple because we recorded it on Wednesday morning due to PAX. We’ll talk about Steve on this Sunday’s episode, at PAX. I promise. On this show, we talked about the TouchPad firesale, Sony’s S1, Rdio’s family plan, Sonic.Net’s fiber service at Stanford, and a whole lot more. We also had fake outtakes. Sorry again that we missed the Apple thing.

yeah if i was an nvidia guy i’d probably go with the EVGA one, because they ARE some damn good mobos. BUT, i think i’m gonna go with the Maximus III Formula because of all the OCing features and crossfire. however, there’s other boards like the P55 GD85 that have some of the OCing/crossfire features but they also have usb 3.0 and sata 3

It’s for the best, you guys should really have a few days to process what just went down in Cupertino. Can’t wait to hear Gary’s thoughts on Sunday.
No need to be sorry Will. Just a timing thing, you guys wanted to get one done before your PAX weekend, totally understandable. For some reason I think this will conversation will provide more laughs in front of a giant live audience. If you guys feel the need for further, more serious discussion on next week’s regularly scheduled episode I think it’s totally cool (for once, lol).
EDIT – Oh god, Norm intro! That was super fucking weird…
EDIT 2 – Wow, not one, but TWO Microsoft related discussions killed and passed over. Windows Phone 7? Pssh. Windows 8 blog? Gets brought up, tangent, Norm never actually talks about it. Awesome.
Wah, Norm podcast intro!
It at least sets up a natural subject for you guys to open up about and truly get into what you guys are best at. It also prevents double dipping into that subject when people ask you about it at the panel. However it is kinda funny to imagine your minds so innocent from the announcement recorded here.
It’ll be up in video form some time later next week.
Well, at least you’re honest. I hope Will speculates on the future of Apple under the helm of Steve Jobs in this episode so we can have two weeks straight of Will making inaccurate predictions through unforeseen actions.
Sprint is #3, Will.
I overclocked mine to 1.7 Ghz!
In regards to “breaking the seal”, we call it FFP (fatal-first-piss) around here.
Good show this week, but I zoned out quite a bit to be honest. I think it would be best if Norm or Gary read the emailed questions too, but I’m not trying to be mean. Will just reads questions with an odd inflection.
And Fawlty Towers is the number two sitcom of all time just behind Arrested Development.
Being Apple / Steve Jobs free is a blessing, all we are hearing about is this news now. It’s obviously significant, but I feel that far too much importance is being placed on one man. The company is bigger than Steve, to set themselves up around a single person was always a bad idea in my opinion. The news deserves to be covered, but analysing it is a waste of time and serves no benefit.
No , Rdio is not the superior service; it’s not available outside of North America = inferior service.
You don’t need a second PS3 to migrate your data. You need an external USB drive and you use the backup utility that’s right on the PS3 menu to do it. It’s the 360 that needs a proprietary transfer kit (but also not a second console).
I really hope plans are in place to record the paxcast, if that is where we are going to be getting the first reactions to Steve Jobs resigning then it should be interesting to hear. Good luck on Sunday guys.
Seriously Gary.
If you need to eat a protein bar either do it before the podcast or stop trying to talk with your mouth full.
Considering that he saved the company I’d say he’s worth the craziness. It’s also very big because Microsoft started having serious issues the instant Bill did pretty much the same thing.
YOU DON’T NEED A SECOND PS3 TO BACKUP YOUR DATA WILL!!! Sorry for the caps but I wanted to make sure you saw. You can use an external USB drive to backup your data, pop the new hard drive in and put all the info back on. There are tons of YouTube videos about it.
Please don’t eat during the podcast. Thanks.
It’s the utter chaos of TIOAT that keeps me violently coming back for more like a hopeless junkie.
Yeah, totally… Well, at least I have Windows Weekly to counter balance This is Only About Apple.
“This would be an okay week to go without internet” – Will Smith
Little did he know…
Me too, but then my brain registered the phrases “singularity”, “taking a shit” and “uploading people to hell” put in some sort of causal connection (I think) and I was back in.
Ford did not “licence Toyota tech for their first-gen hybrids.”

Also this agreement is about Hybrid drives
This is what I’ve been trying to tell people, good thing that someone feels like I feel!
Also, I really love my track pad on my Asus (it is multi touch). I also agree that the scrolling on the right side sucks.
Sprint is the opposite of rural. Coverage follows major interstates. I grew up in Chicago/live in Virginia and know many Sprint customers, but when I visit relatives in rural areas – roaming city. Good thing Sprint’s unlimited includes unlimited roaming.
I have to check the fine print in my contract in regards to unlimited data – I’ve gotten near 4gb with no problem so maybe I’ll binge a bit to get over 5gb.
Oh no! Please find a way to record video. A static shot of the stage would be good enough. Just set up a Zi8 or something.
Fawlty Towers is much better than just OK. It’s the best British sitcom ever made.
Yes yes yes! No video would be a shame.
Pop-rocks + coke and recording via Xbox live microphone, this is the future!
I miss Creepy KOFY Movie Time. It started up shortly before I moved out of SF. It was a lot of fun.
I don’t think sneaking booze into a festival is like piracy. I think a better analogy is that it’s like jailbreaking your phone. You’re doing something to circumvent policy, not to rip someone off. Instead of being limited to festival beer/appstore apps you are opening yourself up to the beer you want to drink or the apps you want to run.
“On this week’s episode, we don’t talk about Steve Jobs resigning from Apple”
Sweet!
So Gary is 3 years younger than me. Now I feel old. Crap!
I always spend an extra 5 minutes at work every morning finding a good space in the parking garage. I usually park at a higher level just to have a nice clean space where I can park straight without some asshole who has taken up too much of their space.
Fuck people.
I don’t agree, the fact is, he hasn’t been heavily involved in Apple for some time. The general day to day running hasn’t been in Steve’s control. He has just popping up to make the odd appearance to keep the share holders happy.
But regardless of the future fortunes of Apple, I still stand by my statement that it was a bad idea to focus the companies image around Steve so heavily. I think it will be good to get some fresh perspective in Apple, maybe see some new ideas. Maybe make iTunes a bit less shit 🙂 … perhaps that’s too much like wishful thinking!
re: sneaking in booze. In that guys defense he could have a point that many festivals/events may base their income predictions on sale of booze and food, not just on ticket sales? I really don’t know how it works. So by sneaking in your drinks you are effectively costing them money, although no more than if you went and didn’t drink anything at all..
currently printing my “you park like shit!” stickers thank you Gary Whitta
just catching up on last week’s podcast, dunno if anyone has said this yet, but pull-ups target your back more than anything else (norm put emphasis on chest and shoulders)
Talking about words with two meanings if a Quebec guy asks a French guy to come over for dinner, the French guy might answer :
” Great i’ll finally get to see your balls”
The slang word for kids in France is the slang word for your nuts in Quebec
If he ate a Pop Rocks-inspired protein bar with Coca-Cola talking through a fan over an Xbox Live microphone, I’d still listen to the fuck outta the podcast.
Pro tip.
Instead of using those stupid stick on joysticks for my ipad I just wipe my thumb on my greasy forehead.
Gives me pin point precision.
Everytime you guys talk about The Singularity, it reminds me of my favorite book about it, Marooned in Realtime by Vernor Vinge. It’s about a world where easy forward-only time travel exists. And The Singularity already happened. So the only people left were those in stasis at the time. So everyone has wildly different levels of technology and only wants to get society restarted so they can experience it. It’s technically a sequel but there is no reason to read that one.
