Episode 96 – Listener’s Choice! – 12/15/2011

On this week’s episode, Gary goes on a rant, Will shares a dream, and Norm hates comic sans. All that, plus the latest on the Windows 8 App Store, the new Xbox interface, Louis CK’s video sale, last-minute gifts, and another edition of fake outtakes.

  1. Purchased Louis CK’s video last night. Pretty funny, and I didn’t have to deal with a physical box or any bullshit.

  2. , the Xbox 360 is not a high powered gaming machine, at ALL. People can squeeze a lot out of it because they can cater exactly to it, but it has a LOT of limitations. There are phones with more memory, faster clock speeds than that thing has. It is OLD and there is a reason it’s $150-200 today. On top of that, the guide pops up just fine, even in the middle of intense scenes in games for me. It’d be cool if it was butter smooth lightning fast, but it’s fine. It works. You’re not shooting guys in quake, you’re responding to a message or accepting a party invite or maybe switching to another game.

  3. ever since windows media center, i don’t think there has been software made by microsoft that used “metro” that i haven’t liked. Especially since they’re polishing it more and more.

  4. Gary’s comparison of which console someone should buy ignored the fact that pretty much every service on the 360, even basic stuff like NetFlix, requires to you be a Gold subscriber in order to use it.

  5. I find it funny you think “90%” of Windows 8 users won’t ever look at the app store considering it will be the ONLY way to get Metro apps (for the average person anyway).

As someone who was originally very much against software keyboards, I love them now. When I got my Zune HD I thought the keyboard was pretty good, but not magical. I’m typing this on my Focus right now. This keyboard feels reeeeally good. Most of the time I don’t even type in landscape because it’s so good.

I can’t see partners leaving Windows Phone, ESPECIALLY not Samsung. While Samsung makes a lot of money from their Android phones, they’re a very close partner with Microsoft. From PCs, to Xbox, to phones, and other random things (like Surface), Samsung is making hardware for Microsoft. They’re not going anywhere any time soon.

  6. Will being real fanboy-ish this time, jesus. Normall I don’t mind him being a fanboy and he’s my absolute favorite on the podcast, but this week he’s just constantly whining about anything that competes with Apple…

  7. A lot of the Windows Phone 7 stuff he just came off really dismissive and seemed to be talking down to it, and didn’t seem to really take it seriously. And a bunch of other stuff where he just seemed really down on anything not apple. Maybe it was just me reading into things but it was the impression I got. He was fine, it was just a little odd when usually he’s really good at not being a fanboy about such things. So when he gets even a little fanboyish it probably seems a little more so than it really is.

  8. Will called it out on this episode and i appreciate that, but let me just confirm that whenever you guys do your upcoming podcast scheduling on air, it is indeed boring as fuck to listen to.

    Anyways, good episode this week.

  9. As someone that works with mold on a daily basis I found the reactions at the start of the podcast to some mold on the wall rather amusing.

  10. Did I say Will? I thought I said Gary o.o Wow. My bad. Totally didn’t catch that till just now.

Gary being an Apple fanboy doesn’t really bother me anymore because it’s expected. I also think fanboy voices can be good in a way sometimes because it’s interesting to get an eye into the thought processes that people that passionate about a product can have. I just wish he’d own his fanboyism instead of saying “I just like whatever works best.” while taking an almost religious advocacy position for it.

  11. The universal Whiskey Media Vita hate is almost baffling. I’m really surprised I didn’t hear “the only thing I played on the PSP was Lumines LOLOLOL” for the tenth time on these podcasts.

This too. I can appreciate them being skeptical about the Vita, I am too (though I would love almost all of Whiskey Media to eat their words for saying the 3DS was doomed when it’s now selling better than the original DS did, despite costing more) but condemning a product before laying hands on it is poor journalism at best.

  12. I think the Tested crew have had their hands on the device. I’m just really not sure they have researched it at all since then. I hope I don’t sound like a Sony fanboy because I’m really not (I actually tend to be more on the Nintendo side… I bought a $250 3DS at launch for Christ’s sake), but it really feels like the crew (Will especially) is just going off what Jeff and Ryan have said about Vita. I doubt they know about some of the launch titles that were announced after E3. There are some reasons to be excited about it, and dismissing it as they did on the podcast just makes it sound like it has absolutely nothing going for it when it has a vastly improved launch lineup over the 3DS.

EDIT: Just got to the part where Will said the only good DSiWare game is a port of Cave Story. Not saying that platform is overflowing with great software, but come on… these hyperboles.
