1. I always dust the pigments on super lightly with a makeup brush then hit them with a blast of just air from a dual action airbrush at around 10psi before pulling back the trigger a bit to apply a very fine mist of fixative. Eliminates almost all chances of smearing when you don’t want it.

2. oooh, great tip! applying with the pigments got really addictive, but worried about long-term durability. what are you using for the airsprayed fixative?

3. It depends on what the pigment wants–different brands behave differently. Since there’s usually no binder of any kind in any of them I usually thin down a bit of straight acrylic medium and mist that but you can also use a super thin matte varnish. With a bit of experimentation and practice you can dial in the magic saturation point where it starts to want to pool up but not quite–the dry color moistens ever so slightly and just kinda tends to retract right into all the lines you want it to and immediately flash dries. It’s like magic when you get it right.

   Regardless of what I use to fix it I always do a thin varnish on top of everything when I’m done so it’ll hold up to moderate handling. I’ve been really loving the Vallejo Mecha Color line so far.

4. I almost did mine the same way but panel lined with thin inks and weathered with pigment powder streaks from front to back, to make it look like it’d been through an asteroid field. Sealed with restore dull coat

6. Indeed, Kayte has the patience of a saint and brings 200% fewer subliminal Ayn Rand plugs along with her than some folks have in the past. She should open a school.

9. Are the majority of the windows just open holes in the model (aside from those that Kayte filled some in with the red paint/glue mixture)? Or is there some sort of clear plastic to simulate windows?

12. Thanks, Norm and Kayte for the helpful tips! I was not sure how I was going to finish mine until I saw your video. Also, the first time I used pigments, they are pretty awesome. As soon as I saw your video I finally pulled this down and got to work.
