Rick Baker’s Make-Up and Special Effects Legacy

Make-up and special effects legend Rick Baker just announced his retirement from film production, coinciding with the auction of his vast collection of original props, puppets, and animatronics. In this final piece from our visit to that collection, we have an extended conversation with Rick about his work and celebrated career–a lifetime of having fun and improving his craft. Thanks so much to Rick and Prop Store for this incredible opportunity!

  1. It’s too bad this collection will be split up. These videos might soon be the only public record of the collection as a whole, aside from the auction catalog.

  2. I never fail to be amazed at how humble and unassuming Rick Baker is. That man is, arguably, one of the most creative artists of the past nearly 1/2 century of filmmaking and yet he is so soft-spoken. At times, he seemed to be almost embarrassed by the attention paid to his work but I also noticed that as the interview went on, he seemed to open up more and become more animated himself. The cliché of “still waters run deep” is never more true than in his case.

I am so envious of Norm, Frank and Joey (and so grateful to you guys as well). This video is an incredible documentation of Rick’s oeuvre – it must have been pretty hard to limit yourself to just a 30 minute video – I can only imagine what didn’t make it into the final cut.

  3. You said what I was gonna say, so I will let you. Just to walk in the that room and see 40 years of make-up history. In awe.

  4. Its fantastic that Tested seems to be on point with leading coverage for this auction. Its a perfect home and glad to see that there will be some record of these great props before they are lost to private collections.

  5. Sorry joey or who ever is responsible for the leaked in music near the end, but I have to share again its really distracting. The content, direction, and discussion are the point of focus and in my opinion it is taking away from that. Music has its place but not over dialog in my opinion. The camera work, direction, and overall production is top notch, but noticed this same practice in another video and it bothered me enough to share again.

Hopefully this is taken as purely constructive as its not intended to be critical. I’m glad to see experimentation and hopefully providing feedback will help the tested team.

    Thanks again.

  6. Damn nice video guys! His stories about too many people having a say reminds me of working with a certain fruit-branded company… damn frustrating sometimes.

  7. Oh man, do I live these videos with, just, awesome dudes talking about the stuff that they love – thanks Tested!

Sounds like Rick pulled a Rob Bottin on “Greystoke” – guess that’s the kind of thing one does when one gets a super-great job for the first time.

By the way, I remember a couple of years back (well, I say “a couple”, it’s probably nearing a decade at this point), when I frequented the CGtalk forums a lot, Rick posted some pictures of what was, at the time, apparently his early attempts at virtual sculpting – a beautiful Zbrush sculpt of Frankenstein’s Monster…

    – you know what? I had to go find it after writing that, here you go: http://monstermaker.cgsociety.org/art/zbrush-monster-3d-307381 – and I was right, nigh on ten years ago. Of course, everyone was like “Are you the *real* Rick Baker?” – I hope it really was.
