This Is Only a Test 134 – Dudes Talkin’ About Linen – 8/9/2012

On this week’s show, Joey gets tempurpedic, Will eats a donut, and Norm doesn’t know how to properly use sheets. All that, plus the Curiosity Rover landing, the Apple/Amazon vulnerabilities, Best Buy going private, Steam selling stuff that isn’t games, and another episode of fake outtakes. Enjoy!

  1. If you say gif like “jif” then there is something wrong with you . Would you say Jiffy with a gee sound?

  2. there’s nothing wrong with him. would you say giraffe with a hard g which is more often perceived to be associated with the letter g? GEAR-raff? phonetics doesn’t always follow from what you might think based on spelling.

anyways, both pronunciations are acceptable, but if you’re some kinda weird purist, the creator of the file type pronounces it like Jif.

  3. In a world where a nationally known brand of peanut putter is called Jif, then pronouncing “gif” like that makes you sound silly even if its technically correct. At least that’s my impression and I’m sticking to it.

  4. I am completely in the middle of Norman and Will on the bedding issue.

I use a mattress pad, but I only change my sheets once a month. My body is not nearly dirty enough for me to need to change sheets once a week. And I don’t even shower at night.

  5. What’s this platform they kept going on about, MSL landed directly on the Martian surface, the skycrane was attached to the body of the rover.

gif was pronounced Jif by its creators however when they upgraded to 89a they started pronouncing it Gif to accentuate the hard g of graphics.

Hippos are more dangerous than other land mammals because they are oddly ninjalike in their surprise attacks, people just don’t notice a relatively quiet herbivore in long grass or up to its eyes in muddy water.

  6. I hate GIF as “jif” too, but I notice Will has a strange way of saying some words, he has an interesting phonetic delivery.

  7. I’m shocked Norm’s bedding is completely wrong considering how often he cleans his pillow cases. Totally agree with everything Will said. Just want to add one thing – You can totally use a sheet without tucking it in. I know, crazy, but it can be done.

  8. You know, hearing this linen conversation makes me think I belong with Ryan and Jeff in the “do whatever I fucking like” category of house care and hygiene. Its a mattress with a sheet over it, and then a blanket over that. Done. None of this double nonsense, no mattress pads, nothing. Just thin ass sheets to feel good between me and the Nylon.

At school I wash pillow covers once a week, maybe two. Bed covers? Shit stays there for months. Funny you bring up the weight thing because when my dad heard that pillows older that 5 or more years can have 10-15% of their weight in human waste, he threw away a pillow that was there as a kid for years.

  9. That joke isn’t from The Simpsons Movie, it’s from “The Cartridge Family”, Season 9 – Episode 5, originally broadcast in 1997. Source: I am a huge Simpsons Nerd.

  10. As a fellow first generation Asian American, I’m not shocked Norm has his bedding wrong as my parents never taught me to do it “correctly” either. $5 says his experience with pillow cases is due to acne problems during adolescence since it’s a common issue in Asia.

Edit: Holy shit there are more comments on the YT video than the site.
