Episode 122 – Don’t Do the Dew – 5/24/2012

On this week’s episode, Chloe requests a toy, Norm checks some facts, and Will yells at the crows. All that, plus the latest on the Facebook IPO, Windows 8 news, SpaceX’s Dragon launch, and a whole lot more. Enjoy!

  2. I would think it’s paternity leave, his child is due in like 6 weeks. I can imagine there’s a lot of stuff to plan.

  3. Nice to see that Will has as much of an attention span as Chloe does. Every week he stops mid-sentence to talk about either a bird or a squirrel he sees out the window.

  4. Why can’t Sunday be sooner? I guess I’ll have to wait. My one hope for the Sunday video is that it’s not edited and is free flowing like the podcast already is.

  5. Excellent observation. In the last 10 or so shows, Will has been doing this a lot. Pretty funny!

  6. About the part where you discussed how to observe a solar eclipse: never point a telescope directly at the sun, unless it’s a really, really small telescope (perhaps with an aperture of up to two or three inches) or if you have a solar filter covering the entrance aperture (the large end of the telescope where the light enters). Bigger telescopes will focus so much light that the energy from the focussed beam will destroy the optics in your non-professional telescope after a short amount of time. Of course, never directly look at the sun through a telescope or binoculars without proper filters!

Concerning the reason for the annular eclipse: do you remember the super moon we had only a few weeks ago? There, the full moon coincided with the moon’s perigee, which caused the moon to look so large. Now, the orbital setup has not changed all that much since the full moon, but since a solar eclipse can only occur at new moon, the moon was exactly at the other end of the orbital ellipse – therefore at apogee. So the moon was farther away from us than on average, which is why we had an annular eclipse.

By the way, with the current orbital setup, the Earth is closest to the Sun in December, and farthest from the Sun in June. So it could not have been that the Sun was too close and therefore appeared larger compared to the Moon. That can only happen in December. 🙂

  7. Whoa, the last question was from Christiana, PA. I’m in Atglen. Duder, if you’re reading this, what’s up from the middle of nowhere!

Came into the comments to make sure this was said. Good to know someone else was on this.
