I enjoy the coffee videos because Will inevitably spills shit, and I’m all about the schadenfreude. Plus, how many tech sites cover coffee news/products? I get that they’re going a bit heavy on it right now, but it’s part of what makes Tested unique.

Yeah I agree, it gives tested a certain personality that so many other sites lack.

  2. An Apple-cast that’s under 2 hours? Either that’s all they talk about or someone had to leave early… or both.

  3. “Just quit f&*$ing stalling and talk”! haha, you said it Will! No one gives a s*it about the Air or the fatties… get to the “retina” Pro! Saw it today actually… eh, they need to run better content for their demo software as I once again wasn’t blown away by the screen, much like when I saw the New iPad, it’s ok. I’ll wait for the 13″ Pro next year.

  4. When Gary yelled “we yield the floor to the gentleman from Tennessee” I lost it! XD Gary is fucking hilarious!

  5. Decorating tip: Full on minimalist 2001: Space Odyssey style. All white with yee olden computers and such built into consoles around the rooms. DO IT.

  6. Okay I was kind of screaming at my TV while watching this podcast. Will is flat out wrong about external storage for content editing.

Every pro suite out there supports it pretty well actually. In Final Cut you have the option of using proxy files where when disconnected your video quality is lower but you are still able to edit just fine.

In Aperture it has a brilliant feature called references, where you can actually have all your master photos on an external drive and all the photo editing you do while disconnected will still be saved. It’s a little limited when disconnected but you can still view and make small changes without the drive just fine.

On top of that, it’s completely ridiculous to think that even 3TB is enough for pro video editing, any real professional is using about 3 times that. They will probably even have a SAN of some time at a certain point because they need it to be fast too.

The simple fact is the MacBook Pro has always been about convenience, you can bring it with you on a shoot and do powerful edits on the fly before you get back to your workstation. I do think still photographers are probably the biggest market for the MBP line because they are basically not very limited. But even then, those with large libraries are going to be using external storage no matter how big the internal one is, simply because it’s much easier to manage large projects between other people.

I do agree with the point about the pricing though, at easily $4k with tax, the maxed out Retina MBP is pretty hard to justify for most people. It definitely remains a premium bleeding edge product that is ahead of it’s time like the 1st gen MBA was. I just think your points are not very relavent to what professionals deal with when it comes to laptops.

  7. A Navy Seal diving in Sydney Harbour a couple of years ago was grabbed by a bull shark on a routine dive, he thought the same thing “punch it” which in fact agitated the animal causing it to thrash back and fourth and he lost an arm and a leg. I think he said the punching was a mistake!
