This Is Only a Test 130 – SimCity Bus Rules – 7/12/2012

On this week’s episode, Will insists on answering a question, Norm says something he immediately regrets, and Joey talks about his time on a tour bus. All that, plus Tweetbot for OSX, our thoughts on Ouya, the right and wrong uses of Kickstarter, and another edition of fake outtakes.

  1. thabigred just replied to your comment:

They told us that the signal could be being split to many times in our house so that could be the issue. I asked microsoft customer service and they told me to connect to my DNS server manually. I haven’t had any outages since then.

I’m still going to call my ISP.

  2. Will, the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is an excellent choice. It starts getting really strange following the first two volumes. Also, you might want to get the annotations for some of the more obscure references (which often are pretty awesome for how tangential they can get, Goldfinger looking for El Dorado, a picture of our heroes and a little boy in a sweater…with the background showing a bunch of people checking the sky for rain, etc).

  3. I was sorting newspapers at my office and came across Walter Mossberg`s the WSJ article on the Nexus 7

Just some corrections on the allegations that it only called it “the best Android tablet” and was exclusionary about any comparisons to the iPad…

The article is calledFrom Google, the Toughest Challenger to the iPad“. The print version has an enlarged quote saying “The Nexus 7 is better [than the iPad] for people on a budget and for those who prefer a lighter, more compact tablet.” It breaks down the iPad and the Nexus 7’s features pretty meticulously, from display to siri/voice commands to battery life and os.

Sorry to bust you balls, I understand fact checking kills podcasts, just thought I’d let you know.

  4. Jesus Christ, Will, even when you got back around to a second attempt to explain what numbers stations are you lost the plot again in less than three seconds!

  5. Loving the podcast and I’m gonna inform you guys on the 911 system, I’m a Sheriff’s Dispatcher/911 Operator. When it comes to Cell Phone’s and 911 the system has two phases, Phase 1 uses the cell tower to give a rough location of where your calling from, Phase 2 will turn the gps on in Smart phones and will broadcast to dispatch as long as your on the call. Our system is good enough to show people that are moving down the highway. I know on my android under some setting there’s a feature always on to use gps on emergencies.

Who gets what call is usually based on what tower it uses, and some are smart enough to know if your on the interstate to call the CHP or if your in a residential area to call the Police (not sure but i think it’s based on your lat/lon numbers). But if not we can always transfer to the right district.

Disclaimer! this is how the techs explained it to me,

  6. Norm seems to be in a bit of bad mood…

Indeed. Very snippy this episode. Maybe time for a break? Short holiday?

  7. I know that this is an old podcast and blah, blah.

Just wanting to say that I’m guessing that printed word stuff really depends on the field of study. I (as a history master’s student) had a large response (close to 700 words) on why the world needs books, and people who catalog books/articles/information. MS word makes writing papers so much easier with it’s integration of various crap. I need to cite sources all the time for papers. Word makes it easy, if I’m not using word’s thing for figuring out sources I’m using Zotero which is awesome but works best with Word at least as far as I know. I’m going to have to write a 100+ page thesis I know what I’m going to use.

  8. I was also pretty drunk the first time I watched The Simpsons Movie. I remember it was way funny… Only time I’ve been drunk at the cinema.
