  1. Simone is the best!! plus she played the intro to ocarina of time on the keyboard!!!! awsomness sensor overloaded!!!!

  2. I try to order locally like from Sparkfun or Adafruit, but I can either buy 20 LEDs for like 3.95 or order from China and get 1000 for like 14 bucks. It’s hard to argue with that. Same with protoboard, switches and pretty much everything. It’s unfortunate, I’d rather shop from US companies but my wallet drives my needs 🙁 .

  3. I know what you mean. Sometimes the speed of shipment is worth the extra cost. Instead of waiting for a month, it’s nice to have it in a few days.

I’ve ordered LEDs from China, and you certainly need to test them all first (a good idea anyway) but there tends to be duds in those bags. Or also frustrating, the postive/negative legs are reversed.

  4. Simone’s enthusiasm is so much fun.

Does anyone know how to order from that market? I’d love some info on how to order some of those LEDs.

  5. Looking forward to Simone being a real part of tested. Nothing wrong with this vid but with a little help from Testeds production crew the future videos gonna be great!

  6. Agreed, That’s why I propped up the names of the places I like. I have a few hundred bucks between them in my shopping cart. We’ll see how my 1k LEDs turn out on a project I’m working on, even if a few hundred are duds it’s still a better price point. But we’ll see. I modified this Lego V22 Osprey and all the parts except the motors came from Sparkfun.com .

  7. Well as she said she was not allowed to do video and was repeatedly show the door. For a sneeked video report this was great.

  8. So glad Simone’s become a part of Tested – looking forward to more videos from her! Would particularly enjoy some introductory electronics stuff from her and Jeremy, as I’ve been wanting to get into that side of things a bit for some time, and I feel like their shared enthusiasm would make for a really great video.

  9. I can’t believe I have never heard of Simone before. I am super excited to see what is to come. This was a great video! I don’t think I would ever leave that place.

  10. I’ve ordered several small electrical parts that came from Shenzhen but I never realized how huge it was! Another great video from Simone! Such a great addition to the Tested team.👍

  11. What are the odds of picking up some fatal bird virus when visiting China? I’m not sure I’d want to go given the horrible air quality and sanitation conditions I’ve heard about, but I’m sure it depends on what part of China you’re in.

  12. This is really cool… and in historical context this vid is absolutely amazing on multiple levels. Thanks.

  13. What you see in this video is basically all in SEG Plaza which is the main building for the electronics market. That being said, that whole area around Huaqiang Bei Rd is filled with other buildings that are filled with similar products. The scale of this whole area/market is surreal and definitly a must see in my opinion.

  14. If you buy stuff from Adafruit or Makershed or the like there’s a pretty good chance it was purchased at Huaqiangbei.

  15. I think maybe for you guys it may make sense, but for me, I only need small quantities and I hate getting bad parts. I don’t make enough electronic projects to do that. It (the quality) makes me not trust any of them. So, say 50 quality(ish) LED’s for 10 bucks in a couple days beats 1000 so/so ones for 15 bucks in three or four weeks. Of course, if I was actually there – no way I could resist (pun) loading up!

Funny thing, I think all the parts are basically made in the same factories – but some get more QC than the others. So I guess I am just paying extra for getting them faster, QC’ed, and in smaller amounts. The quality of the working ones is likely the same.

  16. Reminds me of the Golden Computer Arcade that I went to in Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong. That place was way smaller than this one but had the same piles of products. I was able to buy a single Wii wrist strap to secure a GoPro during scuba diving. It was a magical place.
