Episode 109 – The Wrong Side of History – 02/23/2012

On this week’s episode, Gary hosts, Norm produces, and Jeff sits in to talk about the PS Vita. All that, plus Google’s rumored goggles, OnLive Desktop, and another episode of fake outtakes. Where’s Will!?!?

Imagine the power of backgrounder (which is already awesome on my iPhone) I just hope this thing has lots of ram, speaking of which anyone know how much ram this iPad has?

  2. This really was a fun one to watch live. Watching Will correct Will and Gary via the chat was hilarious. Norm’s “Someone from the chat…” at the same time Will saying “THAT SOMEONE IS ME”. Good stuff.

  3. It makes sense that you’d get both Vita/PS3 versions in the same package, cause you’re really paying for the Sony licence not how many devices you can play it on.

If I had to guess you’ll get both if you buy digitally, but not if you buy a cartridge or Blu-ray.

Bummed when I hear Gary and Jeff complaining that Sony aren’t opening the Vita up to apps and indies when that’s the whole point of PlayStation Suite, which was announced right along side the Vita. There’s a perception it’s just about selling PS1 games on Android phones, but it’s actually a cross-platform development environment intended to make it easy to publish games on Android and Vita (and eventually PS3), or port over iOS games. It went in to beta last fall and we should be seeing the fruits of the initiative soon.

  5. My Vizio Tv has dual band WiFi, and I like using the apps because all I need is to plug in the power and start watching

  6. I think the podcast is much better when one person is missing- The fake outtakes are better with all of them there but the tech part not so much. Maybe the camaraderie makes it hard to stay on subject during the tech part.

For example: I really like Gary being there but it upsets me when and Norm cut a tech segment short because “Gary looks bored”.

Gary was a much better contributor to the tech part as the host than as a “friend of the podcast”. He asked Jeff great questions and keep the conversation going, he’s got a great talent for it.

  7. Props to Gary! Both for hosting, and for drinking out of such a nicely designed glass with thin edges. I can’t help but respect people who keep respectable glassware on hand. (This might be a regular thing, but it is my first time watching the livestream.)

Nicely done gentlemen, and best wishes to Will for a speedy recovery.

  8. Google Goggles, are interesting. There was an anime a few years ago that basically had that idea, called Dennō Coil.

  9. I think Jeff’s take on the Vita is interesting, but I wish he’d addressed the 3DS and talked about how successful that’s been despite the fact it is working in the same mobile environment that the Vita is.

  10. On that Game of Thrones discussion.

If you normally have access to the show and just happen to miss an episode, shouldn’t you still be able to see it? You already paid for cable, no? Is that one window they provide the only time you should be able to see the content?

If piracy is so horrible in that case, so are DVRs.

The fact that the 3DS has sold very well in its first year and has multiple million-selling titles doesn’t jive with the argument that people only want to play mobile games on phones and that handheld gaming is on the wrong side of history, so it’s best to just ignore it.

He was mostly referring to the Vita when he was talking about the “wrong side of history” stuff. He also acknowledged that handhelds tend to be more stronger in Japan than in other regions. The Vita may not end up being as popular as the PSP because the 3DS beat Vita to the punch by getting Monster Hunter first.
