PROJECTIONS, Episode 24: Pimax 8K VR Headset Hands-on!

Two areas of improvement for today’s virtual reality headsets are display resolution and field of view. Pimax, a VR company based out of Shanghai, are hoping to solve those with its 8K headset that it’s launching on Kickstarter. We go hands-on with their 8K prototype to see what game and text content look like under this display, and how immersion is improved with a 200-degree FOV. Here are our impressions and an interview with Pimax’s CEO.

  1. I’ll say again, I love how Norm and Jeremy hold their feet to the fire… Shark Tank style.
In this case the “clients” do a pretty good job stepping up to the challenge.
Best of luck to them !!

  2. I liked the prescription glass inserts, very nice. The smell-o-vision thing not so much. The smell thing is neat, but wow that could be a very expensive add on since the product that gets vaporized would have to be refilled (provided it’s using a standard smell system unless they are using electronics to do something to the air to make you think the smells are there)

Why wouldn’t they have used OLED instead, wouldn’t that have been lighter in weight and quicker response time?

How is this going to adapt current VR games to the wide view (will it just be a letterboxed styled cropping of the games)? Though to be honest this could motivate game developers to rethink the way they design their games to meet these newer systems.

Since this is very HTC Vive in style, I wonder if that mobile unit will be able to be used with this, or if this is going to be more cables to manage with the two HDMIs coming off of the one model they have?

Now that this type of product is out there, I wonder if this is an just early Nex-Gen VR headsets that will have HTC and Oculus following suit.

Neat tech though, but there was way too much; “not the version that will be shipped” for me to be comfortable to back this. If it comes out as great as they promise, then it wouldn’t be a bad to pay full price for.

  3. It feels like a very early prototype to me, but I’m excited to see a jump in resolution on a headset that is coming to market. There are some times with my vive that I notice the lack of resolution. The amount of stuff that is not final scares me, especially with the kickstarter starting so soon, and so does the horsepower required to drive 8k at 90hz, even with an upscaler.
