Hands-On with the Oculus Rift S Virtual Reality Headset!

We go hands-on with the Rift S, the new desktop VR headset that replaces the Oculus Rift and uses inside-out tracking cameras and a higher-resolution display. Plus, a conversation with Oculus Head of VR Product Nate Mitchell about the design decisions behind the Rift S, Insight tracking, and the new Passthrough+ system.

  1. I noticed comments being made regarding freeing up some USB ports as an advantage to the S, however on the Oculus page, they state 3 x USB 3.0 and 1 x USB 2.0?

  2. S looks like a mixed bag. Inside out could be good IF it works, if not then the external cameras are just fine. Higher res is nice. More comfort would be REALLY nice. Changing the subject, as a Rift owner I hope Quest fails. There, I said it. I don’t think lowering the bar on content is a good trade off to fit the CPU into the headset to sell to people who don’t want to spend on a gaming PC. I don’t want developers spending time on Quest mini-games or room scale content. The cable just isn’t that big a deal for sitting/standing VR, which is what you do when you don’t have a full room to dedicate to gaming. Room scale is what people who don’t have VR think they want. Leave the high power CPU on the floor and make the headsets lighter, more comfortable, higher res, greater field of view, etc.

  3. I don’t think that’s updated yet. It’s supposed to just be one USB and one DisplayPort

Thank you Norman, much appreciated. Looking forward to more details and content before deciding on whether to ‘upgrade’ when it hits the U.K.

  4. I have an area set-up in my basement for my HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. I am enamored by the inside out tracking and the travel freedom of the Oculus Quest – if it can live up to the hype. Since I have a Rift, I can pass on the Rift S, but I am also able to travel with my Alienware 17R4 if the Quest is not worthy. I really wish the Quest would let me transfer my Rift content, which may be the deal breaker. Thanks for the Channel and what you all do.

  5. The biggest draw to upgrade for me would be the stereo camera pass through. That’s pretty cool. I’ve been waiting for years for a company to offer a really high frame rate stereo pass through + SLAM and do some crazy 110 deg FOV AR experiences at 90fps. Or 80fps. Whatever. But rIght?! I’ll probably get a Quest if anything this year though. OG Rift is just fine.

  6. OK, time for a really stooopid question here. I don’t do, nor do I plan on ever doing computer gaming; is VR being developed for anything else, or can I just ignore VR completely?

  7.   that’s a great question. I don’t think you should ignore VR and AR, they’re the future of entertainment, communication and productivity! Oculus’ other product releasing this spring, Quest, works completely standalone with full 360 degree room scale tracking of the headset and controllers. And more options like that from other companies are going to follow. No PC, game console, or phone needed. One of us! One of us!

  8. Thanks, guys! Probably the best non-game VR I remember was early on, with a Japanese outfit using a headset and glove combination to show prospective customers kitchen layouts – the glove let them check appliance controls and open/reach within cabinets. But I’m not really seeing much along that line now.

Computer games OTOH, just don’t work for me. I got spoiled a long time ago (try pre-D&D) on tabletop miniatures; six to eight of us, a 5 X 9 or 6 X 12 table, and several hundred nicely painted miniatures has been my go-to.

  9. I feel like this is way overpriced for what you’re getting. Mistake me if I’m wrong, but they didn’t talk about any sort of anti-screen door technology? In that case, I don’t know how you put out a headset in 2019, from Oculus/Facebook no less, with a screen resolution lower than headsets that came out two years ago (WMR lineup). Comfort and screen door effect seem to always be at the top of everyone’s list for what they want to see improved in a headset.

The Rift S is in some sort of weird middle ground. You can get a WMR HMD with a better resolution for far less. Sure, the tracking probably isn’t quite as good, but it’s good enough, especially for the price these days. Then for a little more than the Rift S you can get either a Vive or the HP Reverb. I just don’t know who the Rift S is for.
