PROJECTIONS, Episode 8: Dexmo’s VR Haptic Exoskeleton

In this episode of Projections, Jeremy and Norm discuss how hand presence has presented itself to consumers over the past three years of virtual reality hardware. We get a demo of Dexmo, a wireless exoskeleton controller that tracks individual fingers and promises to provide haptic feedback to let you actually feel objects in VR. Jeremy chats with Dexta Robotics’ CEO about challenges to haptics technology and how they’re tackling the problem.

  1. Really cool looking, but definitely not a product that’s ready for the market I think. It’s the problem of the expectations people have, Norm is working with the system and then it might indeed have an added experience, but would you pay (likely) a few hundred dollars for that? Even if they iterate on this design, I don’t think they can really get past these limitations, imposed by having just the pulling back motion of the motors.

And, besides all of this. The hardware seems very fragmented in VR-world, result being that in an already niche (still) world, support is going to be limited. I can see this already in not having big game-titles being on the VR platform which should be support for the actual VR goggles, let alone add-ons like this. Some titles are nice, many are more like demo’s, I’m not seeing it coming together yet. I’m very hopeful this will change and I want it very badly, but to me it sometimes still feels like the period we had in the 90’s, being a hype for a while and then fading. I hope this won’t be the case this time.

  2. man if i had a kit like this and was writing demos the first thing i would do is make a pulsating ball that grew and shrank in size over time

then i would make a musical instrument with keys

  3. Gr8 when you know a bit about reality: Chinese are NOW broadcasting live 3D-streams so basically that technique will be used to watch the news etc.!!! ‘Thank “god”‘ for lateral & horizontal thinking…

    – Where’s my AI?!?!?!;-)

  4. Ah that sounds pretty good indeed. I am a global thinker, but I’m not living in China. 😉 I totally get why they already developed things like this, their media structure is totally different and you can probably just try out a lot of stuff and release it. But that’s not how it seems to work here, I don’t see any serious mention of that here.

  5. Interesting but as another solution I predict some kind of meshed glove in a few years in which precise portions of the cloth (a finger or the wrist) can be made more or less rigid by electrical currents, with the goal of making it more or less rigid or even solid so as to prevent movement. I don´t see the need for motors in most cases.

Basically any kind of restriction of movement will greatly enhance presence. In the real world, an apple doesn´t push back either, it simply prevents you from accessing the space inbetween.

So in summary it is like a reverse engineered pantomime…I wish I was an engineer so I could build it.
