Tasting Astronaut Food: Inside NASA’s Space Food Systems Laboratory

How does the dining experience in space compare to that on Earth? We visited NASA’s Space Food Systems Laboratory at the Johnson Space Center in Houston to learn about the history of space food and sample some of the same food that the astronauts on the International Space Station eat every day. Photos of the food here!

  1. That was super interesting.

I think it would’ve been better if Will was wearing a bow tie and ate the food and got it all over his beard.

  2. I love the fact that the astronauts on the space station effectively use a breville sandwich toaster to heat their pouches.

I wonder how being in space affects your sense of taste, even in an aircraft the lower air pressure dulls your sense of taste making people crave salt to try to boost the flavours (even though a source of Umami is more effective and healthier). Can’t help thinking the excess blood in your tongue and nasal cavity must make some changes to the senses of taste and smell.

  3. Haven’t finished watching the video yet, but I gotta say, you are lookin’ much slimmer than you used to so good job on that diet! =D I’ve been trying to shed some old man weight lately and it’s no joke. All this extra exercise and watching what I eat isn’t easy so kudos!

  4. Norm’s summation of Vickie Kloeris’ life work, creating good tasting, nutritious food for the US Space Program…”tastes like high school cafeteria food.”

  5. youngpaddy1, in another video Chris Hadfield did a few weeks ago he mentioned that the sense of smell is dulled in space because the sinuses don’t drain properly, so taste is also affected, although it does improve a bit after a few days of acclimatization. Don’t have a link, but you should be able to find it easily on YT. He did short videos on how each of the five senses were affected by microgravity.

  6. He guest-hosted on Mythbusters last fall. They were testing whether it is possible to cook a full thanksgiving dinner in the engine-compartment of your car. Good episode, check it out if you haven’t seen it 🙂

  7. all these videos make me think that technology isn’t ready for real long term space travel. We need artificial gravity!

  8. Does anyone know what them silver pouches that Astronauts drink out of are called, or are they just ‘them silver shiny drink thingys’?
